Overview
Police Dispatcher I, Austin Police – Full time position in the Combined Transportation Emergency and Communications Center (CTECC).
Responsibilities- Receive coded information requesting police investigation from 911 to responsible field units, including vehicle, motorcycle, and helicopter.
- Operate the Police Emergency Radio System in accordance with FCC rules and regulations.
- Maintain constant awareness of the status of mobile units and update information as it changes.
- Receive radio calls from field units; transmit messages via radio or telephone using a Computer Aided Dispatch / Mobile Data Terminal system.
- Update information on an ongoing basis to ensure documentation is accurate and concise.
- Knowledge of the operations of a Police Emergency Communications Center.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to handle conflict and uncertain situations; multitask and prioritize.
- Proficiency in using computers and related software applications.
- Ability to work in close quarters and wear a telephone headset.
- Ability to apply telephone interviewing techniques and quickly obtain appropriate information.
- Ability to learn and communicate medical emergency pre-arrival instructions (EMD).
- Ability to deal tactfully with the public and maintain effective communication with City employees and the public.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
- Must be able to obtain TCOLE Certification within one (1) year of employment and TCIC/NCIC certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Must be able to pass the State mandated exam to obtain the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Telecommunicator License within one (1) year of employment.
- Record computer data rapidly and accurately.
- Related emergency situation experience preferred.
- Maintain security and confidentiality in handling information.
- Salary Range: $26.22 – $29.70 per hour
- Location:
5010 Old Manor Rd (CTECC), Austin, Texas - Hours:
Shift work; schedule varies. Availability for various shifts and days off is required. Weekend and holiday work is required. - Applicants will be administered a skills assessment test; ability to type at least 40 net words per minute is required.
- Offers are contingent upon successful completion of testing requirements including background checks, fingerprint clearance, drug screening, and psychological exam.
- Employees will be in training status for 15-17 weeks.
