Job Summary & Responsibilities

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist produces images in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) standards, and performs within the guidelines set by the Bureau of Radiation Control, Hospital Policies and Procedures Manual, and the Radioactive Materials License. The technologist is accountable to the Radiation Safety Officer for ensuring all regulations are complied with in the Department.

The role involves providing services using radioisotopes to assist in the diagnosis or treatment of disease. The technologist demonstrates knowledge of human anatomy and functions, patient care, positioning, principles of nuclear medicine, radiation protection and specialized techniques, exercising professional judgment and maintaining a demeanor complementary to medical ethics.

  • Participates in providing patient‑specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.
  • Consistently produces scans of optimal diagnostic quality on patients ranging from neonatal to geriatric.
  • Follows established protocols for imaging and isotope dosage; adjusts when appropriate for age or disease.
  • Operates all Nuclear Medicine cameras, computers and related equipment efficiently and effectively.
  • Completes quality scans in a timely manner, effectively organizing and prioritizing workflow.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in scanning trauma, acute & challenging patients; modifies positioning and scanning factors when standard cannot be performed.
  • Possesses knowledge of disease processes, adequately images findings and communicates them to the radiologist.
  • Performs radioactive therapy procedures according to Nuclear Medicine Policies and Procedures and the Radioactive Material License.
  • Employs techniques to minimize radiation exposure by adhering to the ALARA program.
  • Adheres to radiation plan, consistently demonstrating awareness of radiation safety practices.
  • Explains procedures to patients and family in language they understand, clarifying misconceptions.
  • Maintains awareness of patient safety, privacy, confidentiality and dignity at all times.
