The Mental Health Assessment & Response Team (M-HART) is seeking up to 3 counselors to complete our team supporting UT community members experiencing crisis.

, Counseling and Mental Health Center and Longhorn Wellness Center
. Together, the departments work to enhance the health and well-being of students' bodies, minds and lives in support of their academic and personal goals.

Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC) is an accredited on-campus mental health facility dedicated to supporting the well-being of UT Austin students. CMHC offers a range of services, including assessment and referral, group and individual counseling, psychiatry and well-being services.

University Health Services (UHS) is an accredited on-campus medical facility dedicated to addressing the various healthcare needs of UT Austin students. UHS provides comprehensive services, including general medical care, public health education and specialty clinics.

The Longhorn Wellness Center (LWC) is the health promotion unit servicing University Health Services and Counseling and Mental Health Center. Staff focuses on educating students about priority college health issues by hosting workshops and events, creating new tools, and collaborating with the campus community to enhance overall well-being.

Purpose

Provide response to UT community members who are experiencing mental health crises, exhibiting symptoms of mental illness or substance abuse, and victims of crimes in partnership with The University of Texas at Austin Police Department (UTPD). Reports to M-HART Team Lead.

Responsibilities

Respond to mental health crises among UT students, faculty, and staff by providing assessment, intervention, triage, case management, and referrals.

  • Conduct clinical assessments on-site as needed, support individuals through hospitalizations or legal processes, and offer educational resources.

  • Act as a liaison with university departments such as University Police Department (UTPD), Student Outreach and Support Services (SOS), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Title IX, Residence Life, and others.

  • Educate UT community about mental health and available resources.

  • Provide outreach to reduce stigma, participate in relevant meetings and multidisciplinary teams, and maintain accurate clinical documentation in compliance with laws and policies.

  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

  • The ability to be on-call in rotation with others to support the campus 24/7.

Required Qualifications
  • Currently licensed to practice in Texas as a Psychologist, Professional Counselor or Clinical Social Worker. If licensed to practice in another state, must be able to obtain license in Texas within 12 months of date of hire.

  • Demonstrated experience in providing crisis intervention, risk assessment, care coordination, and case management.

  • Experience working with and/or collaborating with law enforcement officers/agencies.

  • Demonstrated organization, administrative, listening and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience providing culturally competent treatment to a varied population.

  • Ability to exercise resourcefulness and good judgment in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Education Requirement:

Psychology - Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology. Graduation from APA accredited doctoral program and completion of APA accredited internship is preferred.

Social Work - Master's degree from an accredited school of Social Work.

Professional Counselor - Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or other degree meeting eligibility requirement in Texas for licensure as a LPC.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience doing mobile crisis work and collaborating with law enforcement officers in response to mental health crises.

  • Experience working as a counselor at a college/university counseling center, outpatient mental health setting and/or health care setting.
