PURPOSE: Responsible for daily supervision of lab staff who will be performing laboratory testing. Duties include but are not limited to coaching, motivating, staffing, evaluating, and training staff. Responsible for following established laboratory procedures, performs routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Carries out all duties while maintaining compliance and confidentiality and promoting the mission and philosophy of the organization.

Functions
  • Manages, trains, coaches, develops, and supervises lab staff.
  • Meets staffing requirements as determined by the lab management team, in a manner that effectively and efficiently meets the needs of the providers and patients.
  • Builds communication and teamwork by holding staff meetings to communicate lab, clinic and/ or organizational information as needed.
  • Remains knowledgeable concerning policies and procedures, and interprets and implements changes accordingly.
  • Maintains records of attendance, on-going evaluation, time off requests, scheduling and counseling for day and after hour staff.
  • Interviews prospective employees and communicates with Human Resources throughout the hiring process.
  • Coordinates on-site training for new and existing staff members.
  • Participates with management team in developing and working towards individual lab goals.
  • Evaluates staff performance and provides regular feedback to the staff. Completes annual assessment reviews.
  • Addresses customer care or service complaints to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Responsible for developing and documenting new procedures and annual review of current procedures.
  • Fosters a safe environment for lab staff and customers.
  • Performs Medical Technologist functions when needed.
  • Directly responsible for all duties as defined under CLIA for General Supervisor. Refer to CLIA General Supervisor Responsibilities.
  • Implements programs/projects for legal requirements, both technical and financial, and government regulations affecting the laboratory and company in consultation with the Lab Manager.
  • Maintains fiscal budgetary awareness in daily operations.
  • Manages supplies in conjunction with Laboratory Materials Supervisor.
  • Promotes long term financial stability and sustainable growth to safeguard our ability to continue to offer high quality, coordinated care.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory program with an Associate or Bachelor of Science degree and at least six years of laboratory experience. Previous supervisory or lead experience preferred. Qualified for duties as defined under CLIA for General Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of lab policies and procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze problems, make decisions, and manage conflict.
  • Ability to train and monitor staff to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations (eg: OSHA, CLIA, COLA) and established practices; implements new policies/procedures and keeps employees abreast of current changes and standards as they relate to lab needs.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal & problem solving skills.
  • Ability to handle competing priorities.
  • Proficient computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
