The Role

Join the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and be part of a team committed to creating a positive impact in the lives of fellow Texans. The state-supported living centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers throughout the state for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attends work on a regular basis; may be required to work a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
  • Assists with treatment plan development and evaluation for assigned therapeutic specialty (e.g., music therapy, therapeutic recreation, dance/movement therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, or vocational rehabilitation).
  • Directly implements treatment plans through hands‑on methods, monitoring goals and objectives through direct contact observation.
  • Supports the assigned therapist or vocational/day programming supervisor in conducting functional skills assessments.
  • Schedules, assists with and/or provides staff training to Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to ensure continuity of treatment plan objectives when Therapists or RTTs are not available.
  • Monitors DSP implementation of program objectives, gathers data and reports to the interdisciplinary team and supervising therapist.
  • Ensures completion of paperwork in program‑related areas to meet applicable standards and procedures; collects data related to treatment plans to assess progress.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team process, providing information on assessment results and intervention responses.
  • Maintains current skills in relation to assigned responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned, including disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of therapeutic techniques (applied behavior analysis, sensory integration, etc.).
  • Ability to train staff in treatment methods and related areas.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Develops and maintains data collection systems for assigned therapeutic specialty.
  • Proficient on personal computers and relevant software.
  • General knowledge of ICF/IID regulations and state supported living center policies.
  • Physical requirements identical to direct contact staff positions.
  • Works cooperatively and effectively with others.
Eligibility & Requirements
  • Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date; out‑of‑state license holders must provide a certified driving record.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • At least six months of work experience with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or performing therapeutic work.
  • Experience in applied behavior analysis, sensory integration, music therapy, therapeutic recreation, dance/movement therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, or vocational rehabilitation preferred.
  • Experience developing treatment and support plans for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
Additional Information
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
  • Males between 18–25 years old must register with the Selective Service.
  • All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.
  • Flexibility for overtime, extended hours, weekends and holidays may be required.
