Job Description

Under the direction of the Branch Director, performs advanced epidemiology work. Performs evaluations of potential adverse effects resulting from human exposure to toxic substances and harmful physical agents. Works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Provides technical information related to occupational and environmental health issues to internal and external agency staff and the public.

Provides epidemiology support to the Occupational Health Surveillance, Environmental and Poison Epidemiology, and Health Assessment and Toxicology Programs. Researches, analyzes, and interprets hazardous chemical risks for internal and external agency staff and the public through outreach materials, presentations, and consultations.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Provides epidemiology support to the Occupational Health Surveillance, Environmental and Poison Epidemiology, and Health Assessment and Toxicology Programs. Performs follow-up on cases of reportable conditions, including contacting and interviewing exposed individuals and their employers, obtaining medical records, completing questionnaires, data entry, and data quality assurance/quality control. Analyzes and interprets surveillance data using scientifically valid methods, appropriate databases, and statistical software. Reviews Branch reports, health assessments, occupational health investigations, and other publications for scientific validity, clarity, and consistency.

Publishes analyses and conclusions internally and in peer reviewed journals. Creates and maintains data visualizations for Branch staff and the public. (50%)

Assists Branch staff in establishing and maintaining Environmental Public Health surveillance measures and dashboards. Gathers data, establishes workflows, and creates data visualizations. Creates related indicator specifications and standard operating procedures. (30%)

Responds to inquiries regarding hazardous chemical risks by gathering pertinent information, including information on the types of chemicals and measurements of exposures. Reviews literature on occupational and environmental health. Provides public assistance on the interpretation of epidemiological and toxicology data and technical chemical information explaining the material at an appropriate technical level.
