Overview

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. We value innovation, collaboration, and diverse perspectives as we shape the future of AI and beyond.

The Role

We offer a portfolio of High Performance and Adaptive Computing products spanning CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and Adaptive SoCs. We deliver solutions for cloud, edge, and intelligent end devices to accelerate workloads from AI to software-defined infrastructure. This role supports AMD University Program activities within the AMD Research and Advanced Development group and involves collaboration with leading professors and universities.

The Person

We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our team in the USA. This is a highly collaborative and travel‑focused role, supporting academic partners across the country, the North America region, and internationally. You will travel regularly to universities, conferences, and training events to work directly with faculty and students.

You will work hands-on with our latest hardware and software, using innovative technologies to support and streamline engineering and business processes while delivering an excellent experience to our academic customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enable the use of AI and High Performance Computing technologies in academia through regular on-site engagement with universities and research institutions (based in the USA).
  • Create teaching materials, labs, design examples, demos, and application notes for on-site and conference-based training.
  • Deliver in-person and remote technical training workshops to professors and graduate students at universities, conferences, and company-hosted events.
  • Collaborate with faculty and students on research and teaching programs.
  • Represent the company at conferences, trade shows, and academic events; support academic customer queries and technical issues.
  • Contribute to the specification, evaluation, and development of systems for academic use.
  • Travel is significant in this role (approximately 25% to 50%), including domestic and occasional international travel.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in Data Science, AI/ML infrastructure or applications development, including programming GPUs with HIP/CUDA or AI frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
  • Familiarity with AMD HPC software and hardware development tools and related computer architecture concepts.
  • Experience developing and delivering training courses.
  • Experience with general software programming, development, and test processes.
  • Experience working in academic research/teaching settings, or as product, applications, or customer support engineer.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable working with cross-functional, remote teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills; self-starter able to work with minimal supervision and lead new initiatives.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently for on-site university visits, conferences, and training delivery.
An Ideal Candidate Would Also Have
  • Experience with some or all of the following technologies: AI (LLM, PyTorch, Tensor Flow, JAX); programming languages (C/C++, Python); programming models (HIP/ROCm/CUDA, MPI, OpenMP, BLAS);
    Dev Ops (Kubernetes, Slurm).
  • Involvement with open-source communities.
  • Experience publishing and presenting technical papers at conferences.
Academic Credentials
  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering/Sciences, or related fields, or equivalent preferred.
Location

Austin, TX, USA (preferred); may be open to other AMD office locations in the USA.
