Position Overview
An Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) in the Docket Management section of the Office of Policy and Docket Management (OPDM) supports the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) by conducting formal administrative hearings, managing hearing procedures, and preparing proposals for decision and final orders on contested and uncontested cases involving electric, telecommunications, and water and sewer utilities.
Responsibilities- Conduct formal administrative hearings in support of the Commission’s adjudicative process
- Preside over contested and uncontested cases
- Manage hearing procedures and schedules
- Rule on motions and evidentiary matters
- Prepare proposals for decision and final orders
- Ensure fair, impartial, and timely resolution of utility regulatory matters
- Graduation from an accredited law school with an LLB or JD
- Licensed with the State Bar of Texas and eligible to practice law in Texas
- Minimum of three (3) years’ general legal experience as a licensed attorney (ALJ I) or minimum of three (3) years as an administrative law judge or litigating contested case hearings (ALJ II)
- Undergraduate degree in government, engineering, finance, accounting, economics, or related field
- Experience as an administrative law judge
- Experience in the practice of utility regulation or administrative law
Standard work schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Employees may request an alternative work schedule according to the PUCT’s Alternative Work Schedule Policy. New hires may become eligible to telecommute after completing 30 to 90 days of employment, subject to supervisor approval.
Veteran PreferenceVeterans, Reservists, or Guardsmen with relevant Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) codes, as listed in the Military Crosswalk for Administrative Law Judge, are encouraged to apply. Documentation including DD Form 214 or appropriate certificates must be provided with the State of Texas Application.
SalarySalary commensurate with qualifications.
