Position: OAG - Criminal Investigations | Sergeant | 26-0319

General Description

The Criminal Investigations Division of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a Sergeant who performs investigative law enforcement work. The role involves investigative work within the Child Exploitation Unit and includes conducting criminal investigations of violations of various state and federal statutes.

Position Functions
  • Conduct in-depth technological investigations and surveillance operations
  • Document the investigative process by preparing records and reports
  • Evaluate and summarize legal aspects of investigations, recommending action as appropriate
  • Identify, gather, and examine evidence, including complex records of individuals, associates, and corporations
  • Locate, contact, and interview potential witnesses and suspects
  • Obtain and prepare affidavits, statements, and confessions
  • Participate on entry team to execute search warrants and make arrests
  • Participate in raids, searches, manhunts, and other operations
  • Participate in executing court orders, warrants, and subpoenas
  • Testify as a witness in trials or formal hearings, and provide trial assistance to lead attorney as requested
  • Perform related work as assigned
  • Maintain relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
  • Attend work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
  • Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Education:

    Sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university in criminal justice or a closely related field; experience in investigative law enforcement may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
  • Experience:

    Four years of full-time law enforcement investigative experience
  • Knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, and other applicable state and federal statutes
  • Skill in researching and interpreting complex rules and regulations
  • Skill in applying investigative techniques and procedures to assigned cases
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, meeting deadlines and maintaining a high caseload
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making
  • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
  • Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG workspace, and collaborate with coworkers throughout each work week (unless on approved leave)
  • Physical ability to achieve 64% or better of VO2 max on the 2000-meter row using a Concept 2 Rower or meet a minimum score of 64% for age/gender on the 500 Meter Row or 4 Minute Row
  • Ability to use and care for firearms; use intermediate impact weapons and Oleoresin Capsicum spray; conduct investigations; evaluate, analyze, and investigate allegations of wrongdoing; prepare reports; prepare criminal cases for prosecution; communicate effectively; and train, lead, and/or prioritize the work of others
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed in compliance with the FLSA
  • Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 70%
  • Certification:
    Must be certified as a Texas peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement
  • Licensure:
    Must possess a valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education:

    Master Peace Officer License (TCOLE)
  • Experience:

    Ability to investigate Internet Crimes Against Children
  • Knowledge:
    Agency rules, policies, procedures and basic understanding of technology-based crimes
  • Skill:
    Advanced use of interview and interrogation skills and knowledge of basic forensic tools
  • Ability:
    The ability to investigate complex cases
