Job Summary

The University of Austin (UATX) is building a new kind of university. We prepare thoughtful and ethical innovators, builders, leaders, public servants, and citizens through open inquiry and civil discourse. We operate with a startup mindset and build systems, governance, and operations from the ground up.

UATX seeks an Assistant Counsel and Deputy Compliance Officer to join the Office of Legal, Compliance, and Governance (LCG). This role reports to the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer and offers broad responsibility and a clear path for growth within LCG.

We are building the highest-impact and leanest legal, compliance, and governance function in higher education. We prize judgment, execution, and institutional stewardship. We move quickly while managing risk intelligently.

LCG is a lean team, and this role requires independence and follow-through.

We use modern tools, including AI, thoughtfully and responsibly. We use technology to improve quality and speed while protecting confidentiality and managing institutional risk.

Candidates who prefer highly bureaucratic environments, slow decision cycles, or narrow job definitions will not find this role satisfying.

Responsibilities

We seek a lawyer with strong judgment and the ability to execute. This is a generalist role supporting business functions across the university, including policy and process development, institutional decision-making, governance and Board-related matters, compliance initiatives, employment and policy matters, and contract drafting and negotiation. You will take on special projects and drive work to completion. This role regularly involves sensitive and confidential matters and requires strong discretion, excellent writing, and exceptional attention to detail.

We seek someone who takes initiative, manages multiple priorities, and solves problems and closes loops.

Qualifications
  • J.D.
  • Licensed in Texas or able to become licensed promptly
  • Generally 3 to 6 years of legal experience, with flexibility for exceptional candidates
  • Excellent writing skills and clear communication
  • Exceptional attention to detail and high-quality work product
  • Strong judgment, discretion, and professionalism
  • Ability to manage multiple matters and drive projects to completion
  • Experience with compliance, employment law, governance, or higher education is helpful but not required
