Job Overview
Custodian III at Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) in Austin, TX. This full‑time role performs senior‑level custodial work in a state supported living center (SSLC). Work includes cleaning, sanitizing, inspecting buildings, restocking supplies, and supporting other custodians under limited supervision.
Responsibilities- Attend work on a regular basis, including shift schedules, rotating schedules and overtime as required by agency leave policy.
- Maintain cleaning supplies, chemicals, equipment and records; perform minor repairs on buildings and equipment.
- Coordinate and perform cleaning, dusting and disinfecting of restrooms, office surfaces, programming areas, residents’ homes, bedrooms and other SSLC areas using cleaning chemicals as needed; collect and dispose of waste/trash regularly.
- Ensure resident homes/units meet or exceed minimum standard guidelines for cleanliness, health and safety, and infection control; inspect buildings and identify problem areas, ensuring follow‑up.
- Assist the Custodian Manager in implementing the overall safety and infection control program; oversee work of Custodians I and II staff as needed; assist the Custodial Manager in training and coaching these staff.
- Participate in disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as required.
- Valid Texas driver license required. Out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record.
- At least six (6) months paid custodial/housekeeping experience required; one year preferred.
- Preferred one (1) year experience working in an environment with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or mental health disorders.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques, stripping and waxing floors, disinfecting restrooms, inventory control, use of custodial materials and chemicals, building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Skills in following oral and written instructions, working independently, standing/walking on hard floors for extended periods, lifting 50 pounds, working harmoniously with co‑workers and patients, and working irregular hours.
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males 18‑25 must register with Selective Service. All SSLC employees are subject to random drug testing and are required to be at least 18 years of age.
