Job Description & How to Apply Below

At Formaspace, we design and manufacture custom technical furniture, workstations, and laboratory environments that help people work smarter, safer, and more efficiently. Every project we take on is unique — built-to-order in our Austin, Texas factory. If you’re passionate about hands-on engineering, problem-solving, and seeing your work come to life on the production floor, we want to hear from you.

Position Overview

The Engineering Technician collaborates closely with design engineers and production teams to transform design concepts into complete, manufacturable parts, assemblies, and documentation. You are responsible for producing accurate CAD models, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and detailed drawings that bring our custom furniture and workstation solutions to life.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create and revise 3D models, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings for custom furniture, workstations, and laboratory equipment using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOMs) aligned with project and manufacturing requirements.
  • Prepare complete engineering documentation packages, including fabrication drawings, assembly instructions, and revision-controlled documentation.
  • Collaborate with Design, Production, and Project Management teams to ensure product designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet customer requirements.
  • Support prototype fabrication, testing, and feedback loops to refine designs before full-scale production.
  • Participate in the engineering change control process, ensuring updates are tracked, documented, and released efficiently.
  • Work cross-functionally with fabrication, welding, assembly, and quality control teams to resolve design issues in real time.
  • Ensure drawings and models meet ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards and company best practices.
  • Assist in maintaining CAD and PDM systems, ensuring file accuracy, revision consistency, and document integrity.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to streamline design-to-production workflows.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Design/Drafting, a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 2–5 years of experience as an Engineering Technician, Mechanical Drafter, or CAD Designer in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor (required) and AutoCAD (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of fabrication methods, including sheet metal, welded tubing, and fastened assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, dimensional tolerancing, and drawing standards.
  • Familiarity with ERP and PDM systems for BOM and engineering document control.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, custom-made manufacturing environment.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
  • Experience designing and documenting custom or configurable products.
  • Exposure to metal fabrication, machining, powder coating, and assembly processes.
  • Understanding of wood, laminate, and composite materials and how they integrate with metal designs.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and design-for-manufacture (DFM) principles.
Special Requirements
  • Ability to work on a manufacturing floor (light-to-moderate lifting, extended time standing)
  • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time
  • Up to 10% of travel.
Why You’ll Love Working at Formaspace
  • Be part of a creative, design-driven team where no two projects are the same.
  • See your designs built from concept to completion in our on-site manufacturing facility.
  • Work in a collaborative environment that values craftsmanship, innovation, and problem-solving.
  • Competitive pay, benefits, and opportunities for professional growth.
