Position: Machinist/Model Maker (R&D)

If you are looking for an opportunity to grow, Emerson has an exciting opportunity for you! Based in our Austin, Texas location, the Prototype Machinist / Model Maker will play a key role in supporting engineering, R&D, and operational projects in a cross‑functional environment. This position requires a strong safety mindset, a can‑do attitude, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

The Prototype Machinist / Model Maker is responsible for fabricating precision prototype parts, models, and assemblies in support of engineering, R&D, and operational initiatives. This role requires strong machining skills, the ability to interpret engineering drawings, and close collaboration with engineers and project stakeholders to deliver high‑quality prototypes under tight timelines. CNC programming experience is required.

Responsibilities
  • Manufacture prototype components, models, and assemblies using manual and CNC machining processes.
  • Develop 3D CAD and CAM as required for programming CNC machines.
  • Manage 3D printers; manage a queue of 3D printing and machining requests.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications to determine machining methods and tolerances.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as mills, lathes, drill presses, and saws.
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC equipment as required for prototype fabrication.
  • Select appropriate materials and machining methods to meet functional and design requirements.
  • Prepare jigs and custom hardware to assist in machining tasks.
  • Perform precision measurement and inspection using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other metrology tools.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project teams to refine designs for manufacturability.
  • Modify, repair, or improve prototype parts based on testing results and design changes.
  • Maintain machining equipment, tools, and a safe, organized work environment.
  • Follow all safety, quality, and compliance requirements.
  • Supervise R&D technicians in basic shop tasks.
  • Manage safety training for fabrication shop; perform as safety champion for machine shops; conduct recurring shop safety inspections.
  • Document work performed and maintain accurate records as required.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 5-10 years of experience as a machinist, model maker, or prototype fabricator.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience machining a variety of materials (e.g., aluminum, steel, stainless steel, plastics).
  • Proficiency with manual machining equipment and CNC programming experience.
  • Proficiency with 3D printers, operation and maintenance.
  • Skilled in the use of precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move materials up to 40 lbs with or without assistance.
  • Manual dexterity to operate machinery and precision tools safely.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future.
  • MUST be US Citizen or possess a Green Card.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting engineering or R&D environments.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (e.g., Solid Works, Mastercam, Fusion 360).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques (e.g., additive manufacturing, composites, or model fabrication).
  • Experience working in high‑tech R&D organization preferred.
  • Experience using MS tools like Teams, Windows, etc.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality.
  • Technical certification or Apprenticeship strongly preferred.
