Responsibilities
  • Maintain the flow of the curriculum supporting each teaching lab in the student machine shop during fall, spring semesters, and summer sessions.
  • Maintain an inventory of student machine shop lab equipment and consumables required for each teaching lab.
  • Collaborate with graduate teaching assistants, students, and professors on teaching lab needs, including preparing lab equipment set‑up and specimens, and assisting hands‑on in the student machine shop.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain machine shop equipment to ensure the education mission is met.
  • Coordinate the purchase of all materials necessary for each teaching lab in the student machine shop.
  • Co‑responsible for teaching the Machine Shop certification classes.
  • May be asked to teach the department’s ME 350, Machine Tool Operations for Engineering, course for undergraduate students.
Professional Machine Shop Support
  • Support filling professional machine shop work orders.
  • Independent set‑up and operation of CNC mills, CNC lathes, drill press, shears, brakes, tool cutter grinders, vertical band saws, horizontal band saws, arbor presses, hardness testers, sanders, and a variety of hand tools and power saws.
  • Use initiative and independent judgment in constructing instruments to precise standards from start to finish, from rough sketches or general verbal instructions.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain machine shop equipment.
  • May be assigned additional duties in accordance with departmental needs.
Required Qualifications
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Five years of experience as an instrument maker or machinist beyond the apprentice level.
  • Experience with CNC machining using Haas machines and controls on at least a 4‑axis mill and a tool room lathe.
  • Must understand G‑code programming at the machine console and have proficiency with Mastercam software.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of 3‑D modeling and design software, preferably Fusion 360 or Solid Works/Mastercam; CNC experience with other manufacturing methods.
  • Experience with abrasive waterjet cutting, 3‑D printing, laser cutting, plasma cutting, Haas 4th axis mill, or Mazak lathe.
  • Welding experience.
Driving Required

This position requires a Class C operator’s driver’s license and a current three‑year driving record. If the applicant is not a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees with CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Salary Range

$52,000+ depending on qualifications.
