Communications Specialist - Humanitarian Engineering

The Cockrell School of Engineering's Humanitarian Engineering Program empowers students to apply engineering solutions to real-world challenges facing underserved communities. Through multidisciplinary coursework and experiential learning opportunities, undergraduate students develop the knowledge and skills needed to create sustainable, community-centered impact.

Purpose

The Alumni/Donor Communications Specialist will support the Humanitarian Engineering Program's outreach and engagement efforts by helping communicate program accomplishments, student impact, and upcoming events to alumni and donor audiences. This position provides an opportunity to contribute to strategic communications while strengthening relationships with key stakeholders who support the program's mission.

Responsibilities

The Alumni/Donor Communications Specialist will collaborate with the Humanitarian Engineering Director and other student employees to create and distribute content that promotes the program's achievements and engagement opportunities. Communications will be targeted primarily toward alumni, donors, and prospective supporters.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participate in weekly planning, brainstorming, and project update meetings.
  • Create and schedule approximately two Linked In posts per week highlighting program activities, student achievements, events, and outcomes.
  • Develop one-page marketing materials, newsletters, email content, and other promotional communications.
  • Coordinate outreach efforts with alumni organizations and development/donor relations teams to increase awareness of the Humanitarian Engineering Program and its impact.
  • Represent and present information about the Humanitarian Engineering Program at alumni and donor engagement events.
Required Qualifications
  • Current undergraduate student with sophomore standing or above.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Creativity and ability to develop engaging communications content.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of a core Humanitarian Engineering course (PUC or HPD).
  • Experience using Canva or similar graphic design platforms.
  • Experience creating and managing Linked In content.
  • Pursuing or planning to pursue the Humanitarian Engineering Certificate.
  • Demonstrated interest in communications, marketing, alumni relations, or fundraising.
Hourly Rate

$15.00 per hour

Working Conditions
  • Standard office environment.
  • Extensive computer and keyboard use.
  • Occasional attendance at alumni and donor events.
