Position: Neighbor Follow-Up Volunteer (In-Home Visit and Nutrition Screening)

Meals on Wheels Central Texas (MOWCTX), a nonprofit dedicated to ending senior hunger and isolation in Central Texas, is seeking compassionate, detail-oriented volunteers to serve as Neighbor Follow-Up Volunteers. This role supports our Neighbor Care program through in-home visits, structured conversations, and basic nutrition screening.

About the opportunity

As a Neighbor Follow-Up Volunteer, you'll visit newly enrolled Neighbors (our term for clients) in their homes, gather feedback on their experience, and assist in administering the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), a validated tool used to identify older adults at risk for malnutrition. Your visits help MOWCTX measure program effectiveness and ensure Neighbors are getting the right support to maintain their health, independence, and dignity.

This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy meaningful one-on-one connection and want to make a direct, measurable difference in the lives of older adults across Central Texas.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-home visits using a structured conversational script
  • Ask questions consistently and accurately record responses while maintaining confidentiality
  • Measure calf circumference using a simple, standardized method
  • Call Neighbors to schedule appointments
  • Enter collected data into the database
  • Report to assigned Neighbor Care Manager for guidance and debriefs
Requirements
  • Strong communication and active listening skills
  • Reliability and respect for diverse populations
  • Completed volunteer application with valid government
  • Brief staff interview to confirm role fit (no resume required)
  • Preference for 6-month minimum commitment
Time commitment
  • Approximately 6-8 hours per week (scheduling and home visits combined)
  • Each home visit takes approximately 30 minutes
Location

Home visits occur across Central Texas. Training and some administrative tasks take place at our central office at 3227 East 5th Street, Austin, TX 78702, or remotely.

How to apply
  • Email a short note about your interest to volunteerwithus. A resume is welcome but not required.
