Job Description & How to Apply Below

Funded by Ameri Corps VISTA, the Foundation Communities Sustainability Program offers a 12‑month volunteer opportunity focused on affordable housing and sustainability. Applicants will work with the Sustainability Team or Capital Projects teams to develop data systems, improve efficiency, and integrate sustainable practices across 30 properties in Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Sustainable Programs Development

As a VISTA member on the Sustainability Team, you will strengthen and expand sustainability programming by enhancing data systems, tracking, and engagement strategies. Your work will focus on solar and energy data analysis, develop tools and resources for residents, and support continuous improvement of sustainability initiatives related to energy, water, environmental quality, and preparedness. Through data‑informed programs, you will help reduce resident utility costs, improve resource‑saving practices, and support long‑term housing stability.

Sustainable

Housing Systems Development

In this role, you will collaborate with the Capital Projects teams to build tools, processes, and frameworks for unit updates and capital projects. Your contributions will integrate sustainability into housing design, materials, and long‑term planning, ensuring high‑quality, affordable housing while reducing utility and maintenance costs. This position is suitable for recent graduates, career‑changing professionals, and retirees interested in sustainability principles in the built environment.

Requirements
  • Experience leading or managing projects
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills (including writing and tool documentation)
  • Experience in project coordination, sustainability, construction or building systems, or process/systems improvement
  • Some work or internship experience
  • Passion and knowledge of sustainability and/or affordable housing
  • Own transportation or willingness to alternate commute (bike/bus) between Austin locations

The position starts on August 10, 2026 and allows up to two work‑from‑home days per week. The Ameri Corps VISTA program provides a monthly living allowance of $1,914, a health insurance stipend, and an education award of approximately $7,000 (or a cash stipend of $1,800) upon completion of service.

Eligible candidates may also receive a housing benefit that covers the full rent for a one‑bedroom apartment at a Foundation Communities property, subject to eligibility requirements. The housing benefit is taxable income and will be reported on a Form 1099‑NEC.

Foundation Communities is an equal‑opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
