School Nurse

The Opportunity

Implement district school health programs and provide direct services to meet the needs of the students at the campus and staff under the supervision of the Director of School Health Services.

Supervise and deliver health services in KIPP Texas schools, collaborating with staff and coordinating care plans.

• Provide direct patient care for first aid, urgent, and emergent care to students, staff, and visitors.
• Provide care in a high‑paced environment serving one to four schools on a campus.
• Administer daily and emergency medications to students according to board policy and physician orders.
• Administer medical treatments according to physician orders and board policy such as gastrostomy tube feedings, urinary catheterizations, tracheostomy care and suction, and ostomy care.
• Collect and update student immunizations in the student information system.
• Conduct state‑mandated screening programs and complete documentation.
• Implement and/or update Individualized Health Care Plans.
• Collaborate with principals, school counselors, teachers, parents, food service, and others regarding student needs with health conditions.
• Collaborate with parents and physicians regarding student health care required during school hours.
• Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee (ARD) meetings of students with health needs.
• Collaborate with Special Education Department and 504 coordinators regarding implementation of health‑related care to students with an IEP.
• Inform and train teachers with a need‑to‑know status of students with chronic health conditions.
• Document all student illnesses, injuries, medications and interactions in the student information system.
• Always provide student privacy and confidentiality when providing care to students, staff, and visitors.
• Provide training to faculty/staff as needed on health‑related topics.
• Train unlicensed staff on health‑related tasks as directed by the School Health Services.
• Registered Nurses follow up with physicians to clarify orders for medications, procedures, and treatments for students that are required during school hours.
• Registered Nurses initiate care plans and emergency care plans.
• Registered Nurses may attend ARDs for clinic coordinator support to interpret health care needs of students needed during school hours.

• Maintain accurate student health records (immunizations, medications, state‑mandated screenings).
• Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and documents on all students.

• Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency, and KIPP board policy.
• Maintain confidentiality.

• Maintain certification in CPR and First Aid, Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis screening.
• Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.

• Completion/Graduation from accredited RN or LVN program.
• Valid Texas license issued by the related Board of Nurse Examiners.
• Active RN or LVN license in Texas.

• Use critical thinking skills when triaging students, staff, and visitors and respond in an emergency.
• Provide care to patients with a history of seizures and post‑seizure rescue care.
• Know and experience caring for patients with diabetes, delivering insulin and rescue medication.
• Know and experience caring for patients with gastrostomy tube feedings.
• Know and experience caring for patients with tracheostomy and suctioning.
• Know and experience caring for patients requiring urinary catheterization.
• Follow physician orders to administer medications via Oral, Sublingual, Buccal, Rectal, Intramuscular, and Subcutaneous routes.
• Knowledge of basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficient in keyboarding and using personal computer and software to enter data and do word processing.
• Effective verbal and written communication.
• Able to walk, run, and bend.
• Able to pick up 20 lbs.

Minimum one year’s experience in direct patient care in a hospital or long‑term care facility as a licensed RN or LVN. Pediatric experience preferred but not required.
