The Opportunity
Implement district school health programs and provide direct services to meet the needs of students and staff under the supervision of the Director of School Health Services.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct patient care for first aid, urgent, and emergent care to students, staff, and visitors.
- Provide care in a high‑paced environment serving one to four schools on a campus.
- Administer daily and emergency medications to students according to board policy and physician orders.
- Administer medical treatments to students such as gastrostomy tube feedings, urinary catheterizations, tracheostomy care and suction, and ostomy care.
- Collect and update student immunizations in the student information system.
- Conduct state‑mandated screening programs and complete documentation.
- Implement and update Individualized Health Care Plans.
- Collaborate with principals, counselors, teachers, parents, food service, and others regarding student health needs.
- Collaborate with parents and physicians regarding health care required during school hours.
- Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee (ARD) meetings for students with health needs.
- Collaborate with the Special Education Department and 504 coordinators on health‑related care for students with IEPs.
- Inform and train teachers on chronic health conditions of students.
- Document all student illnesses, injuries, medications, and interactions in the student information system.
- Maintain student privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Provide training to faculty and staff on health‑related topics as needed.
- Train unlicensed staff on health‑related tasks as directed by School Health Services.
- Follow up with physicians to clarify orders for medications, procedures, and treatments.
- Initiate care plans and emergency care plans.
- Attend ARDs to support clinic coordinators in interpreting health care needs.
- Maintain accurate student health records (immunizations, medications, state‑mandated screenings).
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and documents on all students.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency, and KIPP board policy.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Maintain certification in CPR and First Aid, Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis screening certification.
- Model professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
- Completion or graduation from an accredited RN or LVN program.
- Valid Texas license issued by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
- Active RN or LVN license in Texas.
- Critical thinking skills for triage and emergency response.
- Experience caring for patients with seizures, diabetes (insulin and rescue medication), gastrostomy tube feedings, tracheostomy, and urinary catheterization.
- Experience administering medications via Oral, Sublingual, Buccal, Rectal, Intramuscular, and Subcutaneous routes.
- Basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) knowledge.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient keyboarding skills.
- Ability to use a personal computer and software for data entry and word processing.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Physical ability to walk, run, bend, and lift up to 20 lbs.
- Minimum one year of direct patient care in a hospital or long‑term care facility as a licensed RN or LVN.
- Pediatric experience preferred but not required.
