General Overview

Patient Care Personnel (PCP) play a vital role in supporting the practitioners at Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center (AVES) by assisting with both technical procedures and administrative tasks. Their contributions help enhance the quality of patient care and improve efficiency for our specialists. PCPs are responsible for delivering compassionate, responsible care to all AVES patients, including monitoring, treatment, and detailed record‑keeping throughout hospitalization.

Strong communication skills are essential, as collaboration with doctors, Client Patient Coordinators (CPCs), Veterinary Assistants (TAs), and fellow Patient Care Personnel (PCP) is critical to ensuring high‑quality outcomes. Daily cleaning and stocking of common areas are also required to maintain AVES’ high standards of care. This position demands a dependable, energetic individual capable of multitasking in a fast‑paced, high‑stress environment.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide restraint of pets for examination and treatment by veterinarians.
  • Prepare medications (both injectable and oral medications) for outpatients and inpatients.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork associated with surgical/in‑house procedures.
  • Calculate drug dosages.
  • Log out and administer controlled substances.
  • Pull all packs and equipment needed for minor procedures and setting up in treatment area.
  • Provide supportive therapy to patients in recovery and post‑operatively.
  • Administer all medications and treatments written on each patient’s daily treatment plan per doctors’ orders.
  • Take dictation from the doctors in order to record the report and post‑operative treatments.
  • Cleaning up the recovery area after a procedure has been completed so it is ready for the next case to come in.
  • Help the doctors treat patients, assisting in medical or minor surgical procedures such as irrigating wounds, medicating and bandaging.
  • Perform clinical laboratory procedures such as PCV, TP, Azotix and blood chemistries utilizing Idexx analyzer. Collect blood and urine samples for laboratory analysis and submit samples to Antech Lab. Prepare samples for shipment to off‑site laboratories and prepare all laboratory request forms. Maintain file of lab test results and ensure patient records have test results recorded in them.
  • Accurately record all diagnostics and treatments in patients’ chart.
  • Convey information in an accurate and professional way between the doctor and the client when the doctor is unavailable to speak with the client directly.
  • Recognize the limits of your knowledge. If you are not confident that you know the answer to a client’s question, do not answer it. Ask another staff member for help.
  • Teach clients to administer oral, eye, and ear medications and to give subcutaneous injections or fluids.
  • Make notes in patient files or the computer record of all relevant phone or in‑person conversations with clients. Initial all entries.
  • Schedule surgery, imaging, appointments, or other procedures in accordance to hospital policy.
