Job Description SummaryManage the scientific staff of the Institute for Fusion Studies, manage and foster the progress of the scientific mission of the Center over multiple grants, actively participate and contribute as a fusion scientist on individual research. Work with the AD of the Department to assure that IFS administrative needs are met.
Responsibilities- Manage the research progress of Center's research scientists and graduate research assistants to fulfill the mission of our federally sponsored grants; collaborate and communicate research results with other Institute scientists, present and participate in seminars and other scientific activities of the Institute; manage Center office space; manage the visitor program to facilitate international research collaborations.
- Author annual progress report for the IFS DOE Block Grant, organize and combine input from IFS research scientists and postdocs; every 3 years, author the renewal submission for the IFS DOE Block Grant, organizing input from IFS research scientists and postdocs, including supervising the preparation of the details of all publications, graduate program and graduates, visitors and collaborations, participation in fusion conferences and workshops, community service and proposed research.
- Attend conferences and workshops to present research results and promote research activities; collaborate with scientists at external institutions to further the mission of the Institute; represent the UT Fusion Program via educational and updating visits to the US Congress; participate in professional activities such as committee member, journal referee, grant proposal reviewer, conference organizer, review and program advisory panels; contribute to grant proposals by other IFS PIs.
- Recruit and hire personnel, conduct promotions, including preparation and review of corresponding documents; prepare and review reduction in force documents when necessary; manage the corresponding procedure; conduct annual performance evaluations for all research staff and make decisions on merit increases; monitor annual self‑evaluations for all research faculty and make recommendations to the Chairperson on merit increases.
- Develop and apply physics models for plasma dynamics; compare theoretical models and experimental results; write and publish research results in papers in refereed journals and reports.
- Serve on Physics Department Committees as requested by Chairperson; support educational mission by providing graduate as well as undergraduate students with research training opportunities and access to facilities.
- Responsible for the management of the Center's funds, in particular the IFS DOE grant, for appropriate use and distribution; manage the use of the Center's ICR funds and discretionary account.
- Prepare detailed report for ORU reviews every 6 years as required under HOP 7‑1030 and as scheduled by the Dean.
