Director of the Institute for Fusion Studies

Job Summary

Manage the scientific staff of the Institute for Fusion Studies, oversee and foster the progress of the scientific mission over multiple grants, contribute as a fusion scientist, and work with the department to meet administrative needs.

• Manage the research progress of Center's research scientists and graduate research assistants to fulfill federally sponsored grant missions; collaborate and communicate results with other Institute scientists; present and participate in seminars and Institute activities; manage office space and visitor program.
• Author annual progress reports for the IFS DOE Block Grant, organize input from scientists and postdocs; write renewal submissions every three years, including supervising publication details, graduate programs, visitor collaborations, community service, and proposed research.
• Attend conferences and workshops to present research, promote activities, collaborate externally, and represent the UT Fusion Program through visits to Congress and professional activities such as committee membership, reviewing, and grant proposal support.
• Recruit, hire, and evaluate personnel; conduct promotion reviews, prepare reduction‑in‑force documents, and perform annual performance evaluations and merit increase recommendations.
• Develop and apply physics models for plasma dynamics; compare theoretical and experimental results; write and publish papers in refereed journals and reports.
• Serve on Physics Department Committees as requested; support educational mission by providing research training opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.
• Manage Center funds, especially the IFS DOE grant and discretionary account.
• Prepare detailed reports for ORU reviews every six years as required by HOP 7‑1030 and by the Dean.

• Ph.D. in Physics or related discipline.
• Body of scientific research published in refereed scientific journals.
• Professional demeanor and ability to represent the Center at the College and University level and with external agencies, Congress, and collaborators.

• Experience at the associate director level managing scientific and administrative staff.
• Experience teaching Physics courses.

$180,000 – $225,000 DOE.
