Job Details

Purpose The Garner Lab ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at The University of Texas at Austin seeks a reliable and highly organized Lab Manager and Cell Culture Specialist to help build and support a new interdisciplinary research laboratory. The successful candidate will contribute to laboratory operations, ordering and organization, mammalian cell culture, and research support.

Responsibilities
  • Laboratory operations, ordering, inventory, and organization
    - Maintain laboratory supplies and inventory; place and track orders; receive and organize supplies; maintain shared spaces, freezers, refrigerators, and common reagents; track equipment service and maintenance; help establish and maintain efficient laboratory workflows and recordkeeping systems.
  • Cell culture and research support
    - Perform routine mammalian cell culture, including thawing, feeding, splitting/passaging, cryopreservation, and maintenance of cell lines. Support experiments under established protocols and assist with molecular/cellular biology workflows. Maintain careful records and follow rigorous aseptic technique and contamination-prevention procedures.
  • SOPs, training, documentation, and general laboratory support
    - Assist with development and implementation of SOPs; maintain shared protocols and documentation; help train new laboratory members in routine laboratory procedures; support laboratory safety and compliance; assist with additional research and operational needs as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
  • RESA I:
    Bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical sciences, bioengineering, or a related field.
  • RESA II:
    Master’s degree in a related field, or bachelor’s degree plus at least two years of relevant experience.
  • RESA III:
    PhD in a related field, or master’s degree plus at least two years of highly relevant experience, or bachelor’s degree plus at least four years of highly relevant experience.
  • RESA IV:
    PhD in a related field plus at least two years of highly relevant experience, or master’s degree plus at least four years of highly relevant experience, or bachelor’s degree plus at least six years of highly relevant experience.
  • ALL LEVELS:
    Demonstrated reliability, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate records and follow established procedures. Ability to work independently and recognize and respond to problems in a timely manner. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability and willingness to perform and/or learn routine mammalian cell culture, including thawing, feeding, splitting/passaging, cryopreservation, and maintenance of cell lines (including stem cells).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience with human pluripotent stem cells or hiPSCs is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory ordering, inventory systems, shared equipment, SOP development, contamination prevention, mycoplasma testing, cryopreservation, microscopy, or molecular biology is desirable.
Salary Range
  • RESA I: $35,000+ depending on qualifications
  • RESA II: $45,000+ depending on qualifications
  • RESA III: $55,000+ depending on qualifications
  • RESA IV: $65,000+ depending on qualifications
