Job Description
TxDOT is seeking a Quarry & Pit Safety Inspector to provide expert oversight for the statewide Quarry and Pit Safety Program. This role performs on‑site inspections, reviews safety plans, ensures compliance with the Texas Quarry and Pit Safety Act, and serves as a subject‑matter expert for industry partners and internal teams.
This position requires extensive statewide travel, strong independent decision‑making, and regular interaction with industry officials, government agencies, and the public.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct statewide inspections of quarries and pits and evaluate safety conditions, plans, and barrier/device designs.
- Oversee and administer the Quarry and Pit Safety Program in alignment with state laws and regulations.
- Approve or deny safety plans and provide expert guidance on compliance requirements.
- Maintain accurate program records, documentation, and reports.
- Provide support to the TxDOT rep. in public hearings, meetings, committees, and task forces.
- Develop and review program policies, procedures, and budgets.
- Communicate with industry officials, government partners, and the public to resolve issues.
- Serve as the statewide expert for quarry and pit safety standards and best practices.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- 3 years of experience in maintenance safety programs
- Equivalent experience may substitute for education on a year‑for‑year basis. Graduate‑level education may substitute for experience.
- Safety Impact Certificate (404) — required
- Must pass a drug test - marijuana included
- Working both indoors and outdoors in varied weather and temperature extremes
- Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, and moving equipment
- Wearing required PPE (e.g., hard hat, respirator)
- Climbing ladders/stairs, standing or walking for long periods, bending, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
- Working in confined spaces or elevated areas
- Lifting up to 50 lbs Operating vehicles and equipment
- Performing detailed visual inspections and frequent computer/record‑keeping tasks
- Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD)
- Experience with quarry or pit operations, inspections, or safety oversight
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical documents
- Familiarity with state highway systems or traffic control devices
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities
- Experience coordinating multi‑site programs or statewide initiatives
- Strong communication, negotiation, and public‑facing skills
