Provide technical knowledge in the operation and support of laboratory safety programs in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines and institutional policies.
Responsibilities- Assist manager and staff regarding the interpretation and implementation of health and safety regulations, policies and procedures; consult with institutional personnel to solve problems and implement guidelines; develop policies and procedures, including SOPs.
- Supervise inspections of laboratory properties and facilities to evaluate health and safety issues; maintain current knowledge of government regulations; prepare reports of observations and findings.
- Respond to indoor air quality complaints, potential hazards, fire/smoke reports, and other problems; develop, conduct, or coordinate safety training classes for laboratory employees.
- Oversee response to potentially unsafe conditions such as spills of hazardous materials; monitor inventory of safety items (first aid kits, emergency eyewash stations, flammable storage cabinets).
- Administer Safety Data Sheets program; oversee safety inspections such as fire extinguishers, eyewash/shower stations, first aid kits; perform basic inspections; maintain records for hazardous material storage and disposal.
- Provide safety instruction and awareness through signage, posters, bulletin boards, published articles, and other visual aids; attend seminars and workshops as needed.
- Operate a forklift, hand truck, and pallet jack; move heavy materials and equipment as needed.
- Other related functions as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Two or more years of environmental health and safety experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience with relational databases (File Maker Pro, SharePoint, Access, etc.).
- Attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to draft professional business correspondence.
- Dynamic skill set, organized, capable of planning and coordinating multiple tasks, strong problem‑solving and judgment.
- Ability to work independently with sensitive information, work as a team member, manage time, work under pressure, and maintain punctual attendance.
- Relevant education and experience may be substituted.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, natural science, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or related field.
- Three years of experience in the environmental health and safety field.
- Demonstrated ability using relational databases such as File Maker Pro, Access.
- Experience with SharePoint, printers, and barcode scanners.
- U.S. Citizen; subject to security investigation.
- Class "C" driver’s license and current 3‑year driving record;
Texas license if not resident.
