Join the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) as a Security Officer II. The role involves maintaining a secure and protective environment at a state supported living center, monitoring alarms and surveillance, patrolling facilities, and handling after-hours emergency calls to ensure the safety of residents, staff, and visitors. The position may require training other security officers and participating in disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activities as assigned.
EssentialJob Functions (EJFs)
- Attend work on a regular basis and work a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, with possible extended shifts and overtime in accordance with agency policy; perform other duties as assigned.
- Monitor surveillance cameras and respond to unauthorized persons, fires, unusual occurrences, and emergencies; report abuse, neglect, and exploitation allegations as appropriate.
- Conduct routine patrols of buildings and grounds; respond to fire alarms and assist with drills and life-safety checks.
- Disseminate and coordinate emergency responses and information; notify facility management and law enforcement as appropriate.
- Assist in the apprehension of suspects when reasonably possible in cases of unauthorized entry, malicious mischief, or other violations.
- Prepare timely and accurate documentation related to emergencies and security violations; evaluate and recommend changes to security regulations.
- Train, coach, and mentor new security officers as needed; participate in mandatory training to maintain job competence and professional development.
- Participate in agency disaster response and COOP activation as required; may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
Skills And Abilities
(KSAs)
- Knowledge of building security, surveillance equipment, admissions/exit rules, and alarm devices.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to write incident and investigative reports.
- Ability to communicate with potentially aggressive residents, visitors, and employees; patrol grounds and assess danger.
- Physical ability to walk extensively, run occasionally, and assist in restraining during emergencies.
- Ability to drive a state vehicle; prepare concise reports; train others; stay calm and act quickly in emergencies.
- Skills in defusing difficult situations and in monitoring and assessing situations to determine an appropriate response.
- Knowledge of basic traffic and parking regulations.
- Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license or obtain one within 90 days of hire; out-of-state license holders must provide a certified driving record per HHSC policy.
- High School diploma, GED, or 12 months of work experience required; security, law enforcement, or military experience preferred; experience with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities or mental health issues is preferred.
- Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and LEIE).
- Males 18–25 must be registered with Selective Service.
- All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to random drug testing.
- Flexibility in work hours; may require weekends/holidays and overtime; must be at least 18 years old.
- HHSC uses E-Verify; bring I-9 documentation on first day of work.
