The Security Officer III performs complex senior-level security services at Austin State Hospital. The role supports the Security Supervisor, patrols grounds, conducts investigations, and provides direction to patients, staff, and visitors. Duties include temporary switchboard operations, emergency response, administrative tasks, and disaster response participation.

• Patrol hospital grounds to monitor and mitigate unusual occurrences such as trespassing, vandalism, and emergencies.
• Monitor and direct daily activities of junior security officers as needed.
• Provide security for hospital campus, open gates, guide visitors, and safeguard buildings, property, and equipment.
• Write incident reports and document events in hospital grounds.
• Serve temporary switchboard duties: answer hospital telephone, fire alarm, and emergency response lines.
• Investigate and document unusual incidents (thefts, fires, vehicle accidents, unauthorized departures, weather events).
• Perform administrative duties in the absence of the Security Supervisor (prepare schedules, review reports, attend meetings).
• Respond to fire alarms, determine nature of emergency, reset alarms, and escort firefighters.
• Provide crisis intervention and assist staff in controlling disruptive patients or guests; escort disruptive individuals off hospital grounds.
• Operate state vehicles to transport patients, employees, and visitors on/off hospital grounds.
• Maintain inspection forms for preventive vehicle maintenance.
• Participate in disaster response or continuity of operations (COOP) activation as required.
• Work additional hours, evenings, nights, and weekends as needed.

• Attend work on a regular basis; may work specific shifts or rotating schedules, extended shifts, and overtime.
• Assess personnel and adjust activities of security staff to meet department objectives.
• Serve as representative of the security department during meetings and events.
• Assist in emergency or fire scenarios by facilitating access and mitigating impact.

• Knowledge of alarm devices, traffic and parking regulations, emergency response procedures.
• Skill in personal interaction with patients, staff, and the public.
• Skill in written and verbal communication; ability to draft succinct security incident reports.
• Skill in using Microsoft Office Programs.
• Ability to patrol grounds, detect incidents, and take appropriate action to mitigate campus impact.
• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
• Physical ability to walk or stand for considerable lengths of time.
• Ability to drive out-of-town and operate a wheelchair van.

Must possess a valid Texas driver license within 90 days of hire or obtain one. Out-of-state license holders must provide a certified driving record. Current CPR/AED certification is preferred; willingness to obtain certification within 6 months is required.

• Five years or more continuous work experience in law enforcement, security, or corrections.
• OR three years or more security experience in a mental health facility.

• Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks, including CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct lists.
• All applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants for Waco and Terrell Center for Youth must be 21 years of age.
• Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and extended hours possible.
• Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures is required. Employees must be vaccinated per their level of contact. Unvaccinated employees may need to wear a mask and take protective measures.
