Job Description

Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) are the first point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers when they arrive at the training venue; responsible for checking them in; verifying weapons and credentials; conducting training and overseeing the course of fire at the gun‑range. They ensure the safety of all personnel on the range and secure SSI and SPII information during and after requalification sessions.

Responsibilities

Serve as first point of contact and on‑site training manager for the program.

Conduct all classroom instruction, deliver TSA training, safety brief; introduce and describe new equipment; ensure students sign safety briefing.

Maintain instructor/student ratio 1:6 and ensure inventory of training supplies is on‑hand for monthly sessions.

Verify weapons and credentials of each FFDO before training.

Ensure proper scoring of targets, completion of administrative forms, collection of training data.

Sign and certify qualification scores; handle custody of unloaded weapons, lockboxes, credentials for non‑qualifying FFDOs.

Secure SSI and SPII in compliance with TSA MD 2100.2, Privacy and Information Collection Policy, TSA MD 1400.3.

Oversee time keeping of all SFI labor hours and comply with internal compliance training events.

Qualifications

Education / Equivalent Training:
Current or former federal law enforcement agent, officer, or civilian employee who completed a recognized federal firearms instructor training program (e.g., FLETC FITP, FAMS FITP, FBI/DEA FITP, USPS SIPT). All must complete a 2–3 day re‑qualification program.

Experience:

5+ years of firearms training experience.

Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, certifications, or work/military experience.

Additional Requirements:

Handle weapons and ammunition, wear hearing protection, wash hands, and pass background investigation clearance.

Hourly rate: $30.44–$41.18 (actual salary may vary).
