Job Summary

The Security Officer performs complex (journey‑level) security work and is responsible for maintaining a secure and protective environment at the state hospital. Responsibilities include monitoring alarms and surveillance cameras, patrolling buildings and grounds, checking badges or identification at campus gates, handling after‑hours emergency calls, and coordinating emergency responses. The officer identifies unfamiliar persons on campus, ensures appropriate lighting, and works with limited supervision while exercising initiative and independent judgment.

Job Functions
  • Attend work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule, rotating schedule, extended shift, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
  • Monitor surveillance cameras for unauthorized persons, fires, and unusual occurrences, reporting emergencies immediately.
  • Conduct routine patrols of buildings and grounds.
  • Disseminate and coordinate emergency responses, notifying hospital management and law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Assist in the apprehension of suspects where reasonably possible, in cases of unauthorized entry or violent behavior.
  • Prepare timely and accurate incident and investigative reports.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes to security regulations.
  • Participate in disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as needed, which may require alternate shift patterns or location assignments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of building or premise security and surveillance equipment.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to building admissions, exits, and alarm devices.
  • Skills in oral and written communication, including writing incident and investigative reports.
  • Skill in administering CPR.
  • Ability to communicate with potentially aggressive patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Ability to patrol grounds, detect danger, and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports.
  • Ability to remain calm, reasonable, and react quickly in an emergency situation.
Registrations, Licensure, and Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain one no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle.
  • Applicants with an out‑of‑state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
  • CPR certified or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Twenty‑four (24) months’ work experience.
  • Two years of work experience in security, law enforcement, or military preferred.
Additional Requirements

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males ages 18–25 must be registered with the Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility;
Waco and Terrell Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age. Flexibility in work hours may be required, including overtime and extended hours.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. Employees must be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. If not vaccinated for influenza, employees may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
