Position

Description:

The Network Intern – Firewall Technician provides administrative, coordination, documentation, and entry-level technical support to the Network and Security teams in support of the Firewall Rule Committee (FRC) process. This position offers hands-on exposure to enterprise networking, firewall governance, cybersecurity operations, change management, and IT service delivery within a large statewide network environment. The intern will assist with firewall rules analysis, tracking firewall requests, preparing committee materials, documenting decisions, maintaining records, and supporting process real-world technical experience in a controlled and low-risk environment while supporting operational efficiency and workforce development.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist with tracking and coordinating firewall rule requests through the review and approval process.
  • Review requests for completeness, maintain status records, and document committee decisions and follow-up actions.
  • Support weekly Firewall Rule Committee meetings and communicate with requesters regarding needed information or approvals.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to enterprise firewall operations, network security concepts, and change management processes.
  • Review firewall rules and configurations under supervision using authorized read-only access.
  • Shadow network and security engineers and participate in training related to networking and cybersecurity operations.
  • Prepare meeting materials, maintain tracking logs, and document action items and decisions.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of Firewall Rule Committee procedures, documentation, and reference materials.
  • Generate status reports, maintain records, and support process improvement initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:

    Must be a student in high school or other educational institution or accepted into a college, university or educational institution.
  • Other Conditions:
    Must be at least 16 years of age, a student currently enrolled in high school or any institution of higher education to include a trade/vocational school. Employees at least 18 years of age with valid driver's license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools.
