Position: Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III - Fleet Operations Division

Overview

Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III - Fleet Operations Division (2600532). Based in Austin, TX. TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division is looking for an Equipment Mechanic I, II or III with opportunities for career growth and value work-life balance.

Note:

At TxDOT we supply diagnostic, hand, and power tools needed to get the job done; you will not be required to provide your own tools. This position may be eligible for a recruitment bonus of up to $5,000 for selected candidates who are not currently employed by TxDOT. We offer CDL training with $0 upfront monetary commitment, with salary paid during training and lodging/transportation/per diem as needed.

Position title and salary ranges are listed below. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right to determine the level (I, II, or III) based on experience, education, skills, and business needs.

Salary and Location
  • Equipment Mechanic I — $50,000 - $61,130
  • Equipment Mechanic II — $50,000 - $71,055
  • Equipment Mechanic III — $55,000 - $81,351

Location:

973 Campus, 5501 N FM 973 RD, Austin, TX 78724. Travel:
Yes, up to 25% of the time.

Schedule:

Day shift (Mon–Fri, 7:00–3:30). Onsite with location flexibility.

Work location will be in the Fleet Operations Division Shop; duties include repair/maintenance and inspection of fleet vehicles and equipment, including heavy equipment used in highway/bridge construction, with some work performed for contracted vendors. Employees may interact with other government agencies and private contractors. Work is performed independently, with unusual issues referred to the supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts (air brake and ABS).
  • Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Completes repair orders and enters data into the fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction/maintenance of highways and bridges.
  • Checks lighting and wiring for headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment; moves items as needed.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares vehicles for use by verifying safety features (first aid kits, fire extinguishers, mobile radios).
  • Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems for complex diagnostics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Equipment Mechanic II - Additional responsibilities: trains less experienced technicians; may travel to other shops statewide as required.
  • Equipment Mechanic III - Additional responsibilities: leads and trains less experienced technicians; performs Shop Coordinator duties in the supervisor absence.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience by level:

  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair
  • Equipment Mechanic III: 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair

Education substitutions:

  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience
  • Certificates from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute on a year-for-year basis
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one within 120 calendar days from date of course registration; two attempts allowed for written and driving exams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) is preferred
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; exposure to noise
  • Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.)
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time; frequently lift or carry up to 25 lbs
