Job Summary / General Description

The Service Chiller Technician is the highest level of field service expertise within our HVAC service team. This senior role requires advanced proficiency in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining complex commercial and industrial HVAC systems, with specialized focus on large‑tonnage chiller plants (including centrifugal, screw, reciprocating, and absorption types). The technician performs at or beyond the capabilities of a Service Technician III, including full system teardowns, rebuilds, and overhauls.

They hold relevant manufacturer‑specific certifications (e.g., Trane, Carrier, York, Daikin/McQuay, or equivalent) and demonstrate leadership in troubleshooting sophisticated chiller systems, related equipment, and controls.

Key Responsibilities /

Job Duties
  • Respond to dispatched service calls at customer sites to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on a wide range of commercial/industrial HVAC equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Unitary and Packaged Systems — From small mini‑splits to large rooftop/package units (up to 50+ tons); troubleshoot VFDs, controls, compressors; perform maintenance, repairs, and replacements.
    • Boilers — Conduct combustion analysis, troubleshoot water/air flow issues, repair components, and verify proper operation.
    • Chillers — Diagnose and repair compressor, motor, starter, and drive issues (including Wye‑Delta, AFD/VFD, and solid‑state starters); perform leak detection on low‑pressure systems; conduct insulation resistance (Megger) testing on motors; execute full teardowns, rebuilds, and overhauls of compressors, oil systems, and starters. Expertise in centrifugal, screw, and turbo‑core compressors is highly valued. Troubleshoot water flow, controls, and operational issues in chiller plants.
    • Control Valves and Related Components — Diagnose and repair signal, actuator, and control issues.
    • Heat Exchangers and Cooling Towers — Identify performance deficiencies, troubleshoot flow issues, perform cleanings, gasket replacements, and reassembly.
  • Provide detailed documentation of all service activities, including accurate completion of work orders, parts usage, recommendations, and service reports before leaving the job site.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, customers, and team members; deliver initial and follow‑up training to customers on system operation and maintenance.
  • Identify opportunities to expand service offerings by discussing additional preventive maintenance contracts, upgrades, or related services with customers.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including OSHA standards, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space entry, and proper use of PPE. This is a safety‑sensitive position.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Minimum 5+ years of hands‑on field experience in commercial/industrial HVAC service, with proven expertise in chiller systems (including large‑tonnage centrifugal and screw chillers preferred).
  • Relevant certifications, such as EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification and manufacturer‑specific chiller training/certifications (e.g., Trane, Carrier, York, Daikin, or equivalent).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, and controls systems.
  • Proficiency with computers and software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and service management tools.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while collaborating effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass pre‑employment drug screening and background checks (as required).
  • Willingness to work overtime, on‑call shifts, weekends, and emergencies as needed.
