A Day in the Life of the Outside Plant Technician

This hands‑on, field‑based role focuses on maintaining and repairing aerial and underground coax and fiber infrastructure. The technician works outdoors daily using bucket trucks, ladders, and hand tools to restore service, perform preventative maintenance, and support network reliability.

• Detect, troubleshoot, and resolve system outages for data, video, and telephone.
• Perform emergency restoration of coax, underground cable, and maintenance of power supply, leakage, and splicing.
• Maintain accurate documentation and records.
• Participate in a 24/7 on‑call rotation.
• Prepare and perform emergency aerial and/or underground coaxial cable restoration due to cable breaks or damage.
• Perform preventative maintenance on power supply and actives (testing, balancing, alignment, and adjustments).
• Monitor, record, and repair cable leakage, complying with regulations.
• Assist coworkers with fiber splicing activities.
• Install, replace, and repair coaxial and fiber optic cabling, including aerial and buried plant.
• Perform pole transfers, span replacements, and drop repairs.
• Operate bucket trucks, ladders, and field equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 2 years of hands‑on experience in telecom field work, cabling, construction, or utilities (coax, fiber, or electrical).
• Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
• Strong customer‑service and interpersonal communication skills.
• Basic computer skills and aptitude to learn new skills.
• Problem‑solving, time‑management, and teamwork abilities.
• Ability to read and interpret maps.
• Bucket‑certified and proficiency in Ohm measurements (if applicable).

• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
• Work in both climate‑controlled and non‑climate‑controlled environments; exposure to heat, cold, dust, damp conditions, uneven surfaces, heights, and moving vehicles.
• Prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and driving.
• Safe ladder operation for extended periods.
• Frequent reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs and ladders, and work with hands above and below shoulder level.
• Flexibility to bend, twist, kneel, squat, crawl, and perform fine‑motor tasks with forceful gripping.
• Limited keyboarding tasks.
