Job

Overview

We are seeking a seasoned and visionary Principal Software Engineer to lead the technical direction of our next‑generation finance product. This is a high‑impact, individual‑contributor role for a deeply experienced engineer who thrives on solving complex problems, driving architectural excellence, and influencing product and technical strategy across their organization.

As a top technical leader, you will work closely with engineering, product, and business stakeholders to shape scalable solutions, mentor peers, and champion innovation. You’ll lead major initiatives and set the standard for engineering excellence—without direct people‑management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define and drive the long‑term technical vision and architecture across multiple teams and domains.
  • Work with your agile team to develop and deliver high quality software in a predictable manner.
  • Lead the design and implementation of highly complex systems and features.
  • Serve as a technical advisor and mentor to senior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and growth.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to align technical solutions with business goals.
  • Evaluate and introduce new technologies, frameworks, and practices to improve scalability, performance, and developer productivity.
  • Influence product roadmaps through deep technical insight and strategic thinking.
  • Ensure high standards of code quality, reliability, and maintainability across the organization.
Qualifications
  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong track record of growth and technical leadership.
  • 7-10 years of experience with Ruby on Rails and JavaScript frontend frameworks.
  • Deep expertise in designing and building scalable web applications and distributed systems.
  • Experience deploying and operating applications in cloud environments (e.g., Heroku, AWS, GCP).
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead complex projects and deliver impactful results without direct authority.
  • Detail‑oriented with strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience working in an Agile team, with a track record of continuous improvement.
Additional Qualifications That Are Nice To Have
  • Experience developing accounting or financial software.
  • Familiarity with law firms, legal practice, and law firm billing and accounting.
  • Experience working in a hybrid or remote‑first environment. Competencies
    • Technical Influence. Must be able to develop understanding of different approaches, assess tradeoffs, and make and communicate decisions in a way that garners buy‑in from the team and stakeholders.
    • Communication. Strong written and spoken technical communication skills (in English) are required. Clarity and precision are a must in technical writing. Capable of adapting content for a variety of audiences with varying technical expertise.
    • Collaboration. Working effectively across teams, departments, and disciplines. Facilitate productive discussions, encourage diverse perspectives, and resolve conflicts constructively.
    • Adaptability. Confidently navigate ambiguity and adjust to changing priorities. Embrace experimentation and iterative learning and development.
    • Accountability. Takes responsibility for outcomes and follows through on commitments, demonstrating professionalism and integrity in all interactions.

    • Health Insurance (medical, dental, vision)
    • Flexible Spending Accounts
    • Life, Short‑term and Long‑term Disability Insurance (employer paid)
