NSW Software Engineering Lead

PurposeIn the Advanced Technology Laboratory’s (ATL) Special Warfare Division, we deliver the Navy’s most advanced undersea sensing and communications technologies. The Software Engineering Lead will lead software development and support critical integration tasking on new undersea systems using sensor technologies alongside embedded computers running Linux-based operating systems.
Responsibilities- Lead software development: work closely with project leadership to identify requirements, plan software development and integration, and provide regular status updates.
- Support software design and development, prioritize testing, conduct code reviews, and ensure best practices across the software development lifecycle.
- Lead software integration activities with hardware systems engineers, troubleshoot and debug integration issues, and support travel associated with system acceptance testing.
- Mentor junior software engineers.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related discipline.
- ≥3 years of experience with C++, Python, and/or shell scripting.
- Thorough understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, design patterns, and algorithm performance analysis.
- Understanding of the software development lifecycle, testing methodologies, debugging, and performance profiling tools.
- Ability to scope, organize, and translate high-level requirements into technical tasks.
- Excellent communication skills, readiness to work with team leads and principal investigators.
- Experience overseeing a software team.
- Documented ability to present technical information to stakeholders.
- Professional demeanor, punctuality, ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision.
- US Citizen; subject to government security investigation and eligibility for classified information access at appropriate level.
- Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
- Experience with high-frequency SONAR or other underwater sensor systems.
- Experience with CMake and Linux development tools.
- Working-level understanding of Linux operating systems and administration.
- Experience integrating custom software with industrial embedded hardware.
- Prior military or defense system development experience.
- Eligibility for immediate classified information access.
- Cumulative GPA ≥3.0.
- Standard office conditions.
- Repetitive keyboard use.
- Manual dexterity required.
- Some weekend, evening, and holiday work.
- Possible interstate/intrastate travel.
$104,000–$174,000+/negotiable depending on qualifications.
