Firmware Engineer – Energy Storage Systems - Austin, TX (On-site)
A next-generation power company is deploying a vast network of distributed batteries, transforming a fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant energy system. The team of engineers, operators, and creatives tackles complex challenges in grid balancing, reliability, and real-time system control.
As a Firmware Engineer
, you will design and deliver mission-critical firmware that powers the energy fleet—controlling grid balancing, automated fault response, high-rate telemetry, and fast commissioning. You'll work across bare-metal/RTOS and Embedded Linux platforms in C/C++, owning the full stack from bootloaders and drivers to application features.
- Architect, design, and deliver reliable firmware for the fleet, optimizing for minimal latency and maximum performance.
- Dive into computer architecture to select processors/microcontrollers and influence system-level design.
- Build across the embedded stack: bootloaders, device drivers (bare-metal and Linux kernel), and high-performance applications.
- Collaborate with board designers and power electronics engineers on interfaces, integration, and troubleshooting.
- Lead full lifecycle of embedded systems: processor selection, hardware definition, implementation, testing, and fleet deployment.
- Analyze schematics to debug complex issues and optimize software/hardware boundaries.
- Champion code reviews, test-driven development, and CI/CD for world-class engineering quality.
You bring a first-principles mindset and 5+ years building low-latency embedded software on bare-metal, RTOS, or Embedded Linux. You excel at deterministic, reliable code and thrive debugging across hardware/software boundaries. Comfortable with schematics, architectures (ARM, RISC-V), and power systems integration, you move fast in a hands-on environment while maintaining rigorous quality. If you want to do the most meaningful firmware work of your career and help make the grid resilient, this role is for you.
