Software Engineer - iOS

Job Summary

We’re hiring a Staff iOS Engineer to guide the technical direction of commerce experiences in the Venmo iOS app. You’ll work closely with product designers, Android and backend engineers, and help several feature squads deliver fast, reliable, and accessible experiences. In this role you’ll have broad influence on patterns, tooling, and quality across mobile.

• Acts as a project or system leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers on the project or within the system
• Determines the technical tasks that other engineers will follow
• Actions result in the achievement of customer, operational, program or service objectives
• Proactively improves existing structures & processes
• Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems
• Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions
• Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor
• Trusted to represent Pay Pal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations

• Build, test, and ship features for Pay with Venmo and Business Profiles using Swift, Swift
  
  UI, and Combine (with occasional Objective‑C touchpoints).
• Lead design discussions and code reviews, ensuring durable architectures and clean abstractions.
• Modernize our codebase, migrating UIKit to Swift
  
  UI, adopting async/await, and improving build times.
• Partner with server teams to craft efficient Graph
  
  QL and REST APIs that keep the app fast and data‑savvy.
• Champion performance, accessibility, and reliability; measure what matters and keep our SLIs green.
• Mentor other iOS engineers through pairing, design sessions, and thoughtful feedback.
• Prototype new commerce ideas and AI‑powered features (Core ML, on‑device inference) and help bring successful spikes to production.
• Navigate ambiguity with curiosity, framing trade‑offs clearly and charting a path forward when the problem statement is still evolving.

• 8+ years building and shipping consumer iOS apps, with at least 2 years as a technical lead or staff‑level IC.
• Expert‑level Swift (and comfort reading Objective‑C) plus deep knowledge of Swift
  
  UI, UIKit, Combine, async/await, and networking.
• A track record of raising the technical bar: introducing sound architecture patterns, automated tests, and a healthy code‑review culture.
• Experience shipping complex features at scale offline‑first flows, concurrency, real‑time updates, or high‑fidelity animations.
• Familiarity with mobile AI/ML Core ML, on‑device inference or a willingness to learn and lead adoption.
• Ability to explain complex trade‑offs in plain language and align cross‑functional partners around a technical vision.
• Inclusive mindset; you help teammates grow and design solutions that serve a diverse user base.

• Payments, risk, or fintech domain exposure.
• Experience optimizing App Store release pipelines and feature‑flag‑driven rollouts.
• Contributions to open‑source iOS libraries, conference speaking, or technical writing.
• Deep understanding of mobile accessibility and internationalization.

Primary location:
