AI Engineer, Machine Learning/ ML Engineer
The Role
As a Senior Compiler Engineer on the AI Kernels & Compilers team, you will lead the compilation stack that transforms high-level models into optimized inference artifacts for GM's autonomous and assisted driving platforms. In this role, you will shape the technical vision and develop the tools necessary to streamline the compilation process for ML engineers across the AV organization.
You will architect and advance our model export and compilation pipeline—from capturing high-level model graphs to intermediate representations, compiler transformations, accelerator-specific inference engines, and their integration with our runtime—ensuring we maximize compilation throughput, model fidelity, and on-vehicle latency. Additionally, you will create robust tools to validate numerical correctness, identify and diagnose performance regressions, and deliver actionable feedback to model authors.
If you are interested in the convergence of compilers, performance engineering, and real-world autonomy
, this role uniquely positions your decisions on the critical path of what runs in our vehicles.
This role is predominantly office-based; however, if selected candidates reside within a predetermined radius of a GM hub, a hybrid work model may require reporting to the office a few times a week as directed by management.
What You'll Do- Lead and develop the model compilation toolchain for deploying large-scale perception, prediction, and planning models to our autonomous vehicles.
- Design new compiler passes and analyses to optimize build times, memory usage, and runtime latency, while maintaining or judiciously trading off fidelity within strict safety and reliability constraints.
- Collaborate with kernel, runtime, and hardware teams to co-design interfaces, enhance accelerator capabilities, and ensure the compiler exposes the appropriate abstractions for optimum performance across platforms.
- Establish standards and best practices for model export, validation, and debugging to enable the AV teams to iterate quickly with clear and reproducible performance and accuracy metrics.
- 5+ years of experience in compiler development.
- Familiarity with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Tensor Flow, JAX) and software stacks (e.g., ONNX, MLIR, XLA, TVM, Tensor
RT). - Proficient in writing production-quality Python/C++ code.
- Experience with the software development lifecycle—coding, debugging, optimization, testing, and integration.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in building and optimizing ONNX-based model export and deployment pipelines.
- Background in GPU programming (CUDA) and familiarity with machine learning software stacks (e.g., cuDNN, cuBLAS).
- Knowledge of ML accelerators and hardware architecture.
- Experience in developing and deploying machine learning models.
