About the Role

Second Round is seeking a Senior Data Engineer – Team Lead to join our Information Technology team. This role is responsible for leading the data engineering function while remaining actively engaged in hands‑on development and system architecture. The Senior Data Engineer – Team Lead will design, build, and optimize data pipelines and platforms while mentoring a team of engineers and driving modernization of our data environment.

This position plays a key role in improving system performance, scalability, and overall efficiency while supporting business operations and strategic initiatives.

Key Duties/Responsibilities:
Data Engineering & Architecture
  • Design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines and data architecture.
  • Develop and maintain data solutions using SQL Server, Python, and application development frameworks (C#, .NET, Java, or similar).
  • Lead database design, performance tuning, and query optimization efforts.
  • Design, maintain, and enhance SSIS packages for data integration processes.
  • Ensure data system reliability, performance, and stability across platforms.
Development & Execution
  • Perform hands‑on coding and architecture design (approximately 60% of time).
  • Review team code and enforce development standards and best practices (approximately 20% of time).
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement enhancements to existing workflows and systems.
Team Coordination & Delivery
  • Lead team meetings, manage deliverables, and oversee ticket prioritization and workflow management (approximately 20% of time).
  • Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of team outputs.
  • Represent the data engineering team in cross‑functional initiatives and discussions.
Leadership & Management Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team of 2–4 data engineers, with accountability for team performance and delivery outcomes.
  • Mentor and develop team members, supporting both technical growth and professional development.
  • Maintain deep understanding and ownership of current systems and architecture.
  • Identify and implement process optimization initiatives across the team.
  • Escalate risks, blockers, and strategic issues as needed.
  • Lead the modernization of the data platform, including migration and transition to a modern technology stack.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL Server (T‑SQL, stored procedures, CTEs, query optimization).
  • Strong Python programming skills.
  • Experience in application development (C#, .NET, Java, or similar).
  • Expertise in SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services).
  • Strong knowledge of data pipeline design and optimization.
  • Deep understanding of database design and performance tuning.
  • Ability to design and support end‑to‑end data architecture and platforms.
  • Experience with platform modernization, including migration and re‑architecture.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Preferred Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud technologies.
  • Familiarity with modern data cloud platforms and solutions.
  • Understanding of the financial services or collections industry.
  • Experience leading data platform migration or modernization initiatives.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field required (or equivalent work experience).
  • 12–15 years of experience in data engineering, software development, or a related technical field.
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams.
