Purpose

The Senior Software Developer provides hands‑on technical leadership for Community College Survey of Student Engagement's (CCCSE) integrated portfolio of web applications, survey and data systems, databases, analytics tools, and operational platforms. This position is responsible for maintaining, improving, and connecting systems that have evolved across multiple technology stacks and organizational functions into a reliable, secure, supportable technology environment. The successful candidate will be an experienced developer who can work effectively with legacy and modern systems;

translate program, analytic, event, and administrative needs into practical technical solutions; and provide day‑to‑day supervision and mentoring for a junior IT staff member. This role is essential to ensure that CCCSE's technology supports its national work with community colleges, including survey administration, institutional data collection and analytics, conference and event operations, web services, and internal business processes.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, maintain, test, document, and deploy web applications, databases, and integrations supporting CCCSE programs, including legacy Cold Fusion applications and their modernization, migration, or replacement.
  • Provide technical leadership across CCCSE's environment (Cold Fusion, PHP, SQL Server, MySQL, File Maker Server, Windows Server, survey‑platform integrations, business intelligence, and statistical tools), including secure data exchanges between internal systems, third‑party platforms, and analytics environments, and troubleshooting of complex application, database, server, authentication, and integration issues.
  • Assess and improve connections among applications, databases, and workflows to reduce manual work, improve data consistency, and strengthen maintainability.
  • Work with CCCSE staff to analyze business processes, gather requirements, and deliver usable solutions supporting survey administration, participant management, and institutional analysis, communicating clearly with staff and technical partners.
  • Supervise a junior‑level IT staff member (position pending hire), including assigning and prioritizing work, mentoring, reviewing work products, and managing performance and development; maintain technical documentation that reduces reliance on any single staff member.
  • Collaborate with University IT, vendors, and external service providers to maintain secure, reliable, compliant technology services; perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a related field, plus at least five years of progressively responsible professional software‑development experience.
  • Demonstrated professional expertise developing and maintaining Cold Fusion applications.
  • Demonstrated experience with relational database design, development, query optimization, and administration support using Microsoft SQL Server and/or MySQL.
  • Experience developing and maintaining secure, database‑driven web applications using server‑side technologies.
  • Experience integrating systems through APIs, imports/exports, scheduled processes, authentication mechanisms, and other data‑exchange methods.
  • Experience supporting applications hosted in a Windows Server environment.
  • Experience supervising, leading, mentoring, or formally managing technical staff.
  • Previous professional experience supporting community‑college clients through a higher‑education organization, association, research center, or comparable setting.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, communicate technical concepts clearly to nontechnical colleagues, and translate operational needs into durable technical solutions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to documentation, security‑minded development, reliable operations, and continuous improvement.
