TxDOT’s Austin District is hiring a Roadway Maintenance Tech (Trans Maintenance Tech) for levels I, II, or III. The position is based in Austin, TX and involves routine transportation-related work such as construction inspection, maintenance inspection, bridge inspection, record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, equipment preventive and minor maintenance, traffic control, emergency assistance, and employee training.
CDL Recruitment Bonus
Eligible candidates with a Class A CDL (preferably unrestricted) may receive a one-time recruitment bonus of up to $5,000. The bonus is paid after 12 months of continuous employment and other eligibility conditions. Current and previous permanent employees (excluding summer interns) do not qualify. Company-sponsored CDL training is available at no upfront cost.
Salary ranges are:
- Roadway Maintenance/Trans Maintenance Tech I: $40,918 – $61,130 per year
- Roadway Maintenance/Trans Maintenance Tech II: $42,976 – $64,469 per year
- Roadway Maintenance/Trans Maintenance Tech III: $45,521 – $71,055 per year

Austin District Headquarters, 7901 N. IH 35, Austin, Texas 78753.
Work requires travel 5% of the time and may include emergency response on a 24‑hour basis. Shift: Day, 40 hours per week, Monday‑Friday, with potential nighttime work. The position is full‑time, non‑exempt, and onsite.
Essential Duties- General Transportation Tech I – Determines placement of traffic control devices, inspects barricades, maintains picnic and rest areas, performs plant maintenance, assists with construction inspections, and performs other assigned duties.
- General Transportation Tech II – Inspects routine maintenance contracts, identifies and solves complex maintenance problems, checks materials and equipment against specifications, and operates survey instruments.
- General Transportation Tech III – Performs inspections of routine and non‑routine maintenance contracts, may serve as a crew project lead, and trains other employees.
- Roadway Maintenance Tech I:
No experience required. - Roadway Maintenance Tech II: 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work.
- Roadway Maintenance Tech III: 2 years of experience in similar fields.
- Experience may be substituted with accredited technical training or education on a year‑per‑year basis.
- Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
- Must obtain a Commercial Class A Driver’s License within 12 months of employment.
- Military or veteran candidates required to obtain a Texas Class A CDL within specified days of hire.
- Commercial Driver’s License with no transmission restrictions.
- Knowledge of construction and maintenance equipment and materials.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools, and light and heavy highway equipment.
- Strong safety practices and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Basic vehicle mechanics and repair knowledge.
- Computer and application skills.
- Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments.
- Balancing, walking, standing, crouching on varied surfaces.
- Reaching, extending arms and hands.
- Visual acuity for operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Visual acuity for evaluating work quality and observing facilities.
- Physically demanding; requires pre‑employment physical exam.
- Must pass a drug test and be subject to random testing.
- Must be able to report to duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis.
