Position Information

The District Maintenance Section of the Austin District is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Transportation Specialist III, IV, or V to support the planning, coordination, and delivery of transportation projects and programs that enhance mobility and safety across the region.

This position offers the opportunity to work collaboratively with internal teams, local agencies, and stakeholders to analyze transportation needs, develop solutions, and ensure successful project implementation. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with progressively responsible experience in transportation planning, project development, engineering support, or program administration commensurate with the level of hire.

This position provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and advanced building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and oversight, and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities.

Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

The Essential Duties for Transportation Specialist III/IV/V Include:

Assists in overseeing and administering contracts for installation and maintenance of traffic systems and traffic data collection devices.

Assists in overseeing project assignments and determining work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.

Assists in planning, developing, administering and monitoring district maintenance contracts and service agreements.

Conducts immediate inspection of damaged bridges, determines necessity of temporary or permanent repairs and notifies maintenance personnel; makes recommendations for the closing of bridges.

Coordinates and performs interim and final inspections to identify deficiencies.
