Job Summary
Avon Old Farms School is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Carpenter to join its Facilities Department. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a residential academic campus, where quality craftsmanship, reliability, and professionalism are essential. The Carpenter will work as part of a collaborative team responsible for the care, preservation, and improvement of historic buildings, academic spaces, athletic facilities, and faculty residences.
This role requires advanced general carpentry skills, a diverse and adaptable skill set, and a strong work ethic. The successful candidate takes pride in their work, understands the importance of discretion and safety in a student-centered environment, and consistently upholds high professional standards while working around students, faculty, staff, and families.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of professional general carpentry experience, preferably in an institutional, campus, or residential setting.
- Demonstrated expertise across a wide range of carpentry, repair, and building maintenance tasks.
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and take initiative while contributing positively to a team environment.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Strong commitment to safety, craftsmanship, and maintaining an orderly work environment.
- Ability to interact and communicate professionally with students, faculty, staff, parents, and outside contractors.
- Basic computer skills for work orders, documentation, and communication.
- Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and stationary shop equipment.
- Willingness to comply with all school policies, including background checks and campus safety requirements.
- Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to perform repetitive hand and arm motions and work overhead for extended periods.
- Routinely lift, carry, and transport materials and tools up to 50 pounds; occasionally more.
- Ability to bend, crouch, kneel, climb ladders, scaffolding, and lifts.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow removal responsibilities.
- Physically capable of supporting a demanding, hands-on campus role.
- Perform high-quality general carpentry work throughout a boarding school campus, including but not limited to:
- Demolition, framing (wood and steel), insulation, drywall installation, taping, and finishing
- Door hanging, trim installation, hardwood flooring, suspended ceilings
- Roofing, siding (wood and vinyl) installation and repair
- Gutter cleaning, flat cement work, tile installation and finishing
- Lock maintenance and repair, window and glass replacement
- General repairs within dormitories, classrooms, dining facilities, athletic buildings, and faculty housing
- Respond to and complete routine and urgent maintenance requests in student residential and academic spaces.
- Perform furniture repair and refinishing in the campus workshop.
- Complete painting, staining, and finish work as required.
- Assist other carpenters, tradespeople, and maintenance staff on campus projects.
- Work collaboratively with outside contractors while ensuring adherence to school standards.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation for all work performed.
- Perform all work in a safe, neat, respectful, and professional manner, mindful of the boarding school setting.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of school vehicles, tools, and work spaces.
- Identify and report safety concerns, damage, or inefficiencies to the supervisor.
- Assist with campus events, move-ins, move-outs, and special school activities.
- Support campus operations through deliveries, snow removal, and supply runs.
- Be available for off-hours or emergency response, recognizing the 24/7 nature of a residential campus.
