Summary of

Job Responsibilities:

While serving in the capacity of a working mortgage underwriter, additionally manage and oversee the daily operations of mortgage underwriting and compliance, ensuring timely, accurate loan decisions.

Job Duties:
  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate underwriters to maintain productivity, quality, and compliance standards.
  • Review and approve or recommend complex or exception loan files within delegated lending authority.
  • Serve as a point of contact during internal audits, investor reviews, and regulatory examinations.
  • Develop, implement, and update underwriting policies and procedures to align with regulatory and investor changes.
  • Maintain strong relationships with outside vendors, investors and stakeholders
  • Support new product implementation and ensure underwriting staff are trained in updated guidelines and requirements.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to company policies throughout the mortgage underwriting process.
  • Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with agency, investor, and company guidelines, including Conventional, Portfolio, HELOC and Jumbo loan programs, as well as brokered FHA, VA, and USDA.
  • Monitor compliance with federal and state mortgage lending regulations, including but not limited to TRID, RESPA, TILA, ECOA, HMDA, Fair Lending, and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) requirements.
  • Conduct quality control reviews, internal audits, and file monitoring to identify trends, reduce risk, and improve underwriting accuracy.
  • Partner with leadership to identify process improvements, implement technology enhancements, and reduce operational risk.
  • Collaborate with Quality Control, Compliance, Processing, Closing, Loan Originators, Secondary Market and servicing teams to ensure loan quality and operational efficiency.
  • Research and communicate changes to agency and investor underwriting guidelines, ensuring staff receive ongoing training.
  • Resolve escalated underwriting issues and provide guidance on complex income, credit, asset, and collateral scenarios.
  • Analyze underwriting performance metrics, loan quality, turn times, and defect rates to improve operational effectiveness.
  • Skills and Abilities

    Required:
  • Ability to operate a personal computer (using various software), typewriter, calculator, scanner, mortgage loan origination system, copier, fax, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English and perform complex loan calculations.
  • Mental/visual skills necessary to effectively and efficiently monitor personal computer and loan processor input.
  • The ability necessary to gather data from several sources, prepare loan files and documents and positively represent the Bank during such contacts.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of customer information, employee information and any Citizens Bank business practices, processes and procedures.
  • Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a mortgage underwriter with experience in a supervisory role.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong understanding of conventional, jumbo, and construction loan products, along with Fannie Mae and Federal Home Loan Bank guidelines.
  • In depth knowledge of credit analysis, secondary market income calculation, and loan compliance regulations.
  • Proficiency with mortgage loan origination software, Encompass experience a plus.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with internal teammates and third-party vendors.
  • Knowledge of federal and state lending regulations, including RESPA, TILA, and HMDA.
  • Working conditions:
