Overview

The City of Avondale is seeking an Accountant to join the Finance & Budget Department. Hiring Range: $68,975.47 – $86,219.34

Salary range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.

The hiring range is an estimate of the compensation for the selected candidate. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, and/or training.

Responsibilities
  • Performs various accounting duties such as creating and posting entries to the general ledger, reconciling accounts and bank statements, preparing an analysis of expenditures and revenues, administering grants, participating in special projects, and other financial duties assigned.
  • Prepares journal entries and reconciles general ledger and subsidiary accounts to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper financial reporting.
  • Assists departments in ensuring compliance with grant program requirements, reviews departmental reimbursement requests prior to submission, and reconciles grant-related activities.
  • Assists with financial reporting and related accounting activities and supports year-end audit processes.
  • Provides administrative support for the City’s purchasing card program and related accounting activities.
  • Serves as a liaison with city departments and helps city staff in matters related to financial accounting policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in accounting or closely related field. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered as qualifying.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or a related field, preferably in a municipal or government setting. A bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related field may substitute for the required experience.
  • Work requires the ability to read, interpret, and analyze a variety of financial, technical, and regulatory documents and reports.
  • Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, as well as business math.
  • Work requires the ability to write memos, reports, emails, document procedures, and prepare recommendations for procedural changes.
  • Planning responsibilities include assisting grant liaisons with grants administration that includes procedural adherence, fiscal reporting deadlines and methods, preparing for audit reviews, and coordinating with employees and the grants coordinator.
  • Job does not have direct budget responsibility but provides research and analytical support to departments on grant-related budgeting and other financial matters.
  • Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.
  • Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work also requires critical and independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
  • The incumbent contacts others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City, which may be involved in decision-making or providing approval or decision-making authority for purchases or projects. In addition, the Accountant works with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required of the Accountant.

    Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, supplies, or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, brokers, and sales representatives. Employees must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and a safe manner.
