Library Assistant – Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department
The City of Avondale is accepting applications for a Library Assistant. This role assists patrons with information about library materials, equipment, programs, and services. The Library Assistant works with staff and patrons in person, online, and over the phone.
Position OverviewThe Library Assistant assists with circulation, computer and printer assistance, and maintenance of library technology. The assistant also addresses patron behavior issues, resolves disputes, enforces policies, and handles difficult situations.
Key Responsibilities- Assist patrons with check‑in and check‑out and locating materials at a branch or within the Avondale Library System.
- Process incoming materials and other circulation duties.
- Resolve problems with patrons' accounts and records.
- Handle patron incidents, problems, concerns, and conflicts while ensuring policies are followed or referral to appropriate colleagues.
- Assist staff and patrons with scheduling and use of facility meeting rooms and study rooms.
- Provide reference interview assistance, literature and online search help.
- Help with library collections and refer questions to librarians as needed.
- Assist with library programs, special events, and outreach activities.
- Perform cash handling and balancing of the cash drawer at shift end.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
- A high school diploma or GED equivalency.
- One year of customer service experience.
- Two years of computer experience and/or training.
- Proficiency in Spanish preferred.
- Valid Arizona Operator’s Driver’s License or ability to obtain by time of hire.
- Ability to read library catalog, manuals, Dewey decimal classifications, book reviews, order forms, and computer screens.
- Ability to perform general math calculations.
- Ability to write notes on patrons’ records and changes to the technical manual.
- Effective time management for daily work assignments.
- Occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers, or temporary employees.
- Strong initiative and independent analytical and evaluative judgment.
- Regular attendance and the ability to work in a safe, alert manner.
Requires participation in a rotational schedule, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
