Job OverviewThe Instructional Assistant K-3 / Playground Assistant supports teachers and ensures student safety and well‑being during classroom and non‑classroom activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Administers tests to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress.
- Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to reinforce learning concepts.
- Supports teachers with instructional tasks such as reading, drill work, storytelling, correcting papers, supervising testing, etc.
- Assists with non‑instructional duties (snacks, toileting, clothing routines).
- Collaborates with teachers regarding student progress and objectives.
- Guides independent study and enrichment work.
- Maintains classroom equipment, student files, and records.
- Monitors student activities in classroom and playground for safety and positivity.
- Participates in meetings (in‑service training, etc.) to share information and improve skills.
- Performs record keeping and basic clerical functions (scheduling, copying) to support teacher.
- Responds to emergency situations (injured students, fights) to resolve safety concerns.
- Assists other personnel as required.
- Performs additional duties assigned by the superintendent or designee.
- Administers first‑aid and provides immediate emergency care.
- Assists students with personal care needs.
- Diffuses potential emergency situations.
- Monitors campus environment for unauthorized persons.
- Monitors playground equipment for safe use.
- Monitors students during lunch, recess, and other campus activities.
- Reports observations and incidents regarding student discipline, accidents, etc.
- Facilitates games for age‑appropriate activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- 60 college credit hours or an associate degree, or proof of successfully passing a state‑approved para‑professional assessment.
- Proof of immunity to Measles and German Measles (MMR).
- Fingerprint Clearance Card (IVP).
- Job‑related experience.
Skills and knowledge include basic math, reading manuals, writing documents, and maintaining records. Abilities include scheduling, working with diverse groups, problem solving, and adhering to safety practices.
Work EnvironmentPhysical demands include lifting, carrying, frequent stooping, kneeling, and standing. Requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. Work is performed with minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.
