The Department of Music invites applications for an Adjunct Artist Teacher of Percussion to join the APU Music faculty in continuing its decades long tradition of developing musicians of character and competence within a 'top 10 music school in California'. This position is designed for an active artist-educator who is passionate about teaching, mentoring, recruiting, and building a compelling percussion studio and percussion ensemble within a collaborative university environment.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of adjunct faculty is to deliver instruction in the manner determined by the department. In addition, faculty responsibilities may include:

  • Teaching applied percussion lessons to undergraduate, graduate and artist certificate students.
  • Teach Percussion Techniques course.
  • Collaborating with faculty in drum set and jazz studies to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive percussion curriculum.
  • Actively recruiting and mentoring students to build a strong, visible, and artistically driven percussion studio.
  • Guiding students in technical development, musicianship, professional preparation, and artistic identity.
  • Supporting and enhancing student participation in the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and chamber ensembles.
  • Engaging with regional high school, community college, and college music programs as part of recruitment and outreach efforts.
  • Maintaining active involvement with percussion societies, professional organizations, and the broader musical community.
  • Leveraging connections to the Los Angeles concert, church, recording, and commercial music industries to inform teaching and create professional pathways for students.
Qualifications
  • Masters Degree.
  • Demonstrated excellence as a percussion artist and teacher.
  • Experience teaching applied percussion at the secondary or post-secondary level preferred.
  • Ability to recruit, inspire, and retain motivated and passionate students.
  • Strong collaborative skills and commitment to student-centered education.
  • Active professional engagement within the percussion and broader music communities.
  • This appointment is part-time and adjunct, with teaching assignments based on enrollment and departmental needs.
Workload
  • Assigned teaching duties will not exceed 9 units per semester; office hours and additional duties may be assigned. Total workload will not exceed 29 hours per week, nor 24 units per 12-month period.

  • Self-starter, ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
Compensation
  • $25.32 - $27.32/hour (Using a 3 unit full semester appointment as a pay guide). The actual hourly rate will be determined by the units, course length, experience, and rank of the candidate. Adjuncts are paid on an hourly basis which includes preparation and teaching time.
