The Special Service Officer (SSO) Supervisor is a supervisory position assisting department leadership in the day‑time operation of the department. Supervisors are Watch Commanders, responsible for staff, including staff administrative assistants and student personnel, and may be called upon to be the first on‑scene supervisor at a critical incident. They are also responsible for the general protection of the community and campus facilities.
This is an armed emergency response position and at any time there may be a need to immediately respond to security, safety, life‑threatening, or other urgent situations. The Special Service Officer Supervisor is the first‑line supervisor for all qualified Special Service Officers of the University.
- High school diploma. Bachelor’s degree or 60 units of college preferred.
- Required certification:
California P.O.S.T. Certified Academy Certificate of Completion, BSIS Guard Card, BSIS Firearms Permit, tear gas, collapsible baton, First aid, CPR, and AED. Required certifications must be in possession at the time of hire. - Tear gas and collapsible baton certification are required within the 1st month of employment.
- Candidate must satisfy all the requirements of a Special Service Officer.
- Must have no criminal record.
- Must possess a current CA driver's license.
- Previous college and/or university campus safety/security/law enforcement supervisory experience preferred or equivalent on‑the‑job experience.
- Directs and supervises all subordinate Special Service Officer personnel, Parking Enforcement, Special Events, and Investigations. Oversees proper performance of duties and adherence to established rules, policies, procedures, and the Chain of Command.
- Supervises in‑field training. Oversees that Special Service Officer personnel are knowledgeable and competent.
- Responsible for maintaining safety and emergency procedures.
- Patrols university property, in a vehicle or on foot, to provide security and traffic control.
- Performs physical security checks of campus facilities, ensuring facilities are in use by appropriate personnel.
- Responds to and supervise emergency and non‑emergency radio calls.
- Act as a liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Observe, report, and identify persons involved in suspicious activities, including suspicious vehicles. Ensures that unauthorized persons leave the university property.
- Enforces university policies, regulations, and municipal, state, and federal laws. When requested, assist local law enforcement as necessary.
- Conducts criminal, non‑criminal administrative, and internal investigations as assigned and completes detailed reports.
- Assists with the implementation of crime prevention programs.
- Conducts ongoing training as necessary to ensure officer certification and competency.
- Assists Student Life and Residence Life personnel as necessary. Provides on‑campus escorts to the university community.
- Develop training programs for staff and student workers on a variety of topics relevant to campus safety, law enforcement, etc.
- Assist in the development of departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Participate in the disciplinary process as required when dealing with subordinate personnel and student workers.
- Develop strategic plans for special events as well as supervision of the events and deployment of personnel.
- Review and approval of subordinate’s reports.
- Conduct or assist in quality control audits and inspections of department personnel, activities, and assets.
- Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.
