OR – Firefighter​/EMT – Baker Fire Department – Closing

The Baker City Fire Department is seeking applicants for the position of Firefighter/EMT.

A Baker City Firefighter is tasked with protecting life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical response, hazardous materials response, and fire prevention activities. Firefighters will drive and operate fire apparatus and equipment, provide emergency aid, and will maintain all required EMT/Advanced/Intermediate/Paramedic certification status. Additionally, all firefighter personnel will perform station and equipment maintenance and participation in departmental training and preparedness activities.

All combined firefighting and emergency medical duties consistent with certification level and departmental assignments.

Supervision

• Supervision Received:
  • Works under the general supervision of a shift lieutenant, who assigns work details and reviews work for conformance with departmental policies and procedures.
• Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervises the movement, care, and safety of injured persons. May act in a supervisory capacity during fire suppression activities on occasion. May assist with coordinating, instructing, or supervising the work of volunteer firefighters, new recruits, and other part-time department personnel as assigned.

About the Department:

The Baker City Fire Department (BCFD) is a combination, all hazard, fire department that responded to 1,408 calls for service in 2024, this is a 34.65% increase over 2023. BCFD is already on track to respond to 1,400 calls for service this current calendar year: delivering both fire and emergency medical services to our community. Additionally, BCFD personnel provide mutual aid fire protection to neighboring departments and fire districts not only throughout the county, by within the state of Oregon.

The BCFD has also “deployed” to provide assistance to our neighboring state of Idaho in the past.

BCFD operates from a centrally located fire station within the city that is staffed 24/7/365. The Career staff are highly trained in fire suppression and hold either a Paramedic or EMT license for medical operations. In the event of a significant incident, additional personnel trained in fire suppression and other special skills are “called in” to reinforce personnel already on scene.

The department operates two front-line Type 1 fire engines, a 77-foot Aerial (Quint) ladder truck, a Type 3 Brush/Extrication vehicle, a type 6 wildland vehicle awarded to the department by a grant from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s (OSFM) office, a utility pickup, and a Command vehicle. The department will be adding to its fleet soon a Type 1 fire engine coming out of the City of Salem and the Salem Fire Department to assist in the replacement of its aging fleet.

Potentially, the department may be adding one new, to new‑near, type 1 fire engine with passage of the FY 25/26 Budget. We will update as necessary.

As the only full-time paid fire department in Baker County, BCFD is dedicated to serving the community; not only within Baker City but with our neighboring fire departments throughout the County (when called for assistance). BCFD takes pride in working efficiently, effectively, and safely to ensure positive outcomes for those in need. The BCFD also conducts fire, life and safety inspections of businesses, provides public education, and investigates fires (with expert assistance from the OSFM).
